What do you think of a 270 NH Baler? I had an old hayliner 67 that gave me good service, and a 270 looks a lot like it.

Our 270 has been great. I prefer to use it over our 336 Deere. Most parts are still available.

As Paul stated, the hitch is pretty close and you will find yourself driving on the windrow if you have a bigger tractor. NH addressed this with the 271 and the longer tongue. I found a 2 piece PTO shaft assy from a 271 and plan to convert ours once I find a good 271 drawbar.

Check the ball bearings on the plunger, feeder and pickup, plus look for rust/holes in the tin, especially the high wear area where the feeder forks run.

I saved our 270 from the torch. Spent about $700 in parts plus a considerable amount of shop time in the off-season, but came away with a great baler that looks and runs like new.

Good luck,
Scott

It's one of the best lower capacity balers they made. A big tractor will drive on the windrow - they put the hitch pretty close.

The 270 has been on this farm as long as I have. Put up 2-6,000 bales a year, & have done _very_ little to it. That's 175,000 bales or so. Currently using it with a bale basket the past 4 years.

In my opinion the 270/271 was one of New Hollands best baler. They have good capacity for their size, and have a good feeder design. I've used a bunch of New Hollands, and the 270 was probably the best.

I think that you will find that it does a good job. Just remember to check it carefully for signs of serious wear. Look for grooves in the bill hook and wear in the knotter linkages. Essentially there should be no wear. Also look at the carriage and see how loose it is running in the tracks. I failed to do this recently and bought an otherwise nice 273 at auction for a premium price. I missed the broken carriage frame with completely worn out shafts and bearing. $600 later to rebuild it....
