Sorry another question, just noticed knive clearance between static and moving knives varies i.e bottom of knives is very tight and top is a wider clearance. Am reluctant to fiddle with it if will stay that way but concerned that any wear might see knives at bottom clash--anyone got any experience with this situation?

Before you adjust it, take a pry bar or something and lift the plunger. Then reach in and feel for play in the two bearings on the right side of the plunger. If those two bearings are not good, you can't adjust your knife clearance very well, and you run the risk of the knife hitting together.

My 276 was the same way. I adjusted it according to the manual and it has made a difference in how it bales. It also helps to sharpen the knives with an angle grinder(beveled side only).

Just read the manual carefully and follow as directed. It looks complicatd to adjust the plunger but it is really not that bad. I used a set of feeler gauges, but a wise old baler man told me that a dime is just as good.

Knife adjustments are critical and should be done according to your "Manuals" instruction. Good luck

Plunger slides have adjustment. I might get yelled at for this, but one eighth inch clearence wount hurt in alfalfa. Just to give you some kind of idea what you can live with.
