Gehl 1870 round baler problems.

Hi all,
I"ve got a ten year old Gehl 1870 baler, which i"ve had for 6 or 7 years now, and lately (this year only) it doesn"t want to make bales. It made the first 300 or so with no problems at all, then slowly it started to have problems forming the bale, especially as the belts didn"t seam to want to drive just after the tailgate was shut. We seamed to solved that problem by boosting the air pressure in the reservoir to 140psi (it was running at 110psi), now the problem seams to be as the bale forming fingers lift out of the way the bale stops turning, even though sometimes the belts are turning. Once in a while the tailgate doesn"t latch properly, but this doesn"t always happen, and every time I go to adjust it , it apears to be corrrectly adjusted. help please anyone, thanks, oj in manitoba.

thanks for your help guys. I think thta we"ve sloved the problem, i set the hydraulic tension to come onto the bale sooner(to make a denser core) and it seams to have solved the problem. I managed to bale my last 50 acres without incident.

Don't know about your Gehl, but does it have "flaps" on the roller that starts the bale? If so are they wore off? They wear off over time on Case Intl balers and you have trouble starting a bele. Look in your manual. Tom

No , there is no belting on the floor, just a large driven roller that the bale sits on, and it apears to be driving properly. Once the hydralic tension takes over the baler works ok, its getting the bale to from and grow that is so hard. thanks for the input oj

Does this model have the wide belt on the floor.

If it does is it turning when the bale stops or is it slipping?

If it doesn't then I'm not sure what the problem could be.

Another thought.

I have an 1850 and it has a valve to adjust to set your core denseness.

Maybe you need to tighten the core pressure to keep more tenion on the belts when the bale is small.

Manual should tell how to do this.
