Tight bale problem with my NH850

On my farm its never any problem to get a good tight bale, shoot I have to run in 3rd to keep them from being to tight. But I baled some hay at my friends place yesterday and even in 1st gear trottle wide open then bales would not get tight. His fields are almost 100% grass and may field has a lot of clovers and other broad leave stuf in it. Is that where the problem is??

Old we use a NH 851 and have the same trouble in short hay nothing seems to help we also had a 850 a few years ago and it was the same way I'm with the others it's just the nature of the beast and this year and last with the dry wether the grass has been short and thin so the bales haven't been real tight.

I had a NH roll baler years ago. I liked it alot. It would not roll very short grass well. Hay would start spitting back out of the front of baler then finally start and woul dbe lopsided. Nature of the beast I guess. Good luck

How tall was the grass? My 850 makes a good tight bale with tall grass, but no so good if it is short.

Wasn't all that tall and I fugured that was part of the problem. I have been baleing hay with this for the past 4 or 5 years and have always had trouble makeing the bales to tight and this was a first as far as loose bales

Could be. What about everything else? Was it mowed the same? Tedder? What about the rake? Was that the same. I've always found that roll-a-bar rakes don't make a row very agreeable to my baler. One great big long rope that the baler can't tumble, so it doesn't spread out like it should. I've always prefered the rotary rakes anyhow, and now use a Kuhn. So, I'd figure the problem was either the rake, or, as you suggest, the crop you were baling. That can make a huge difference.

Used a big wheel rake which I have used before. Only thing that was differant was the type of mower used, other then that the only differance was the grass that we baled.

Old, we're just down the road a piece from you and all we got down here is grass, and ya gotta be careful rolling that stuff up too tight. It will cook off and burn down your haybarn. I know. Now what I do is leave the crimper parked, cut with the sickle, and then rake up enough windrows, whether it is two, three, or whatever to make a good big windrow, and then run the old M in 2nd gear with the 845 chainer, and they are tight enough to handle, but not so tight that they get hot or are too heavy to lift. A big enough windrow and then wander back and forth and you'll have it made. Harley

Hay was good and dry, just plan grass and they just would not make a ithgt bale. You can slide your hand in to them any place you want. When I bale on my farm I have to run 3rd gear or they are to tight to lift. On his farm I had to run 1st and they still didn't get tight. He rake it in big winrows, a lot bigger then I ever do on my farm
