Have an auction coming and I am looking for a sickle mower for ditchs and edges of field. Not familiar with them so would this be a good choice? IH "draw-bar mount 7 foot sickle mower" would this be belt drive?

If you want it for ditches, make sure it is belt drive or "pitmanless". If it has a wood pitman stick, it won't "flop" down or up to get the ditches.

It's probably of the IH 120 Balanced/1200/1300 series. I just fixed up a 120 Balanced Head mower that was given to me. You can still get most all of the parts. It was a drawbar type mount. I just bolted a lower arm hitch to the mower and now it hooks to the tractor by the lower 3-point arms. It works well for mowing the ditch banks and around the pond. Mine's just a 7 foot model.

Hi Gumby, I'm trying to restore a very rare IH hay rake and am needing a correct dolly wheel which is made from two halves bolted together. I was told today some of the IH drawbar mounted mowers had rear dolly wheels. Could you confirm if the IH 120 has one or not and if it does what size tire is used? Thanks for any assistance in this matter. Hal

Hal, I would bet you have the same rake I am using. I uses the two "crazy wheels" on the back, two car size tires on the front, and a long hitch. I also have a McCormick #31 mower using the same wheel. The rake is pretty rare in these parts, and hard to find a tire. I recently had a tire go bad, but was able to find the 4.00x9 tire locally for around $40. I think the rake I have is a McCormick #5 but it might be a #15. I have been raking hay with this rake since I was about 10 or 12 and I am 46 now. Still works great, but not the best looking rake around. With that said I cannot help with finding the wheel. I would bet they are rare and hard to come by, but the 31 mower uses the same wheel you describe, and I believe there are other model mowers using the same wheel. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ron for your reply. What you are describing is a No. 5 rake which was made during the 1952 to 1960 time frame. A model No. 15 only has the 2 dolly wheels on the rear and attaches to the tractor drawbar like a New Holland 256. I am trying to restore a McCormick No. 11 which is a 2 point fast hitch PTO driven model for a Super C or 200 and other tractors with the IH Fast Hitch. The dolly wheels on a No. 11 use an 8" tire so the wheels are slightly smaller. I am considering using the wheels you noted on your Model No. 5 as I could modify them for the hubs on my rake without too much trouble. I'm going to keep searching for the correct 8" wheel before I do something else but it is appearing these 9" wheels are certainly more common then the 8" one I'm really needing.

Hal, I live between Iberia and Crocker, just down the road from you. I guess I have never seen a fast hitch rake like you describe. You might want to run over to Mt. Sterling and see if the old IH dealer over there has anything. I know there is some old stuff over on the hill.

Ron, I went over to Mt. Sterling this morning. That is where I usually go when I need an IH part from a dealer. That IH dealership has been in the same family for something like at least 80 years. The current owner is 85 or so and still at the business on a regular basis. They didn't have anything that could help me out but his son mentioned they threw out the dolly wheels with mounted tires about a year ago. Was tired of moving them around down in the basement. Most other parts I need which are unique to my model are just no longer available. Even some wear parts like bronze bushings aren't available. Looks like I will be doing some lathe work on this one. Them still having the wheels around for this period of time gives me hope that if I can find some more old dealerships they might just have some items around from years ago. I will need to find some more old time IH dealerships and run a few parts by them. I did find a drive belt I needed which is still available under a new part no. Thanks for the suggestion and if you know some other good old time dealerships please let me know where they are located. Thanks and have a great week. Hal
