Sickle Mower Protection and Lubes

Anyone advise on best lube choices for sickle bar mower sections/knives, and for winter storage of bar surface? Do dry-lube sprays or the graphite lubes work better than regular oil or WD-40 applied on sections? I got an old sickle bar mower I'd like to keep it going another 20 years or so. Just wonderin what y'all are using to keep your iron in top condition these days.

I use the old motor oil form oil changes on bar & knife bar also remove knife bar in winter for inspection & repair My mower is 60 years old & still going .

Helps to remove the knife in the fall,sharpen it up then apply oil.Much easier to put on new sections when not rushed to get mowing.

I bought my dads ford mower, and all he ever did was oil the bar with used oil in the spring. After 40 some years it is still in good shape. I however do oil it with used oil when I am done with it in the fall.If you have a shed to put it in that is great but if not like me, cover it with a tarp.

My self I have never worryed about doing any thing to them other them grease all the zerks. 5 minutes cutting next spring and no paint/lube/grease will make a differance any how. I do oil them up just before starting in the spring but other then that I just park them. So far I have never had any problems doing it that way

Waste oil for operating, and for winter storage experiance has shown me that its hard to beat a cheap can of spray paint.

I use waste oil. Have a paint can and a old paint brush to apply it. Works good keeps it looking new.
