Seeded 20lbs. / A of orchard grass & duo Festulolium mix 9/30/05. Got a little growin but not much. 2/15/06 broadcast 3 lbs. / A of med. red / Ladino mix. It really took off. Now have 20 acres of 90% clover. Want to graze it but afraid of bloat. Can I no till some grass after taking a cutting of hay? Any suggestions appreciated.

I try to remember to never say never, so no garuntees. When I switch to another pasture I let the cows fill up on the old pasture if possible. Try not to let them in new pasture hungry. If there is much difference like a lot more clover. I will feed them hay and let them fill up on that. This year I had baled some clover grass mix that was heavy on the clover. I let them fill up on that just befor moving them to a feild that was about 80% or better clover. Another possability is cut the hay a little high and feed them some of that hay just before turning them in on the clover a few days after cutting and baling. I have not had any trouble with bloating on clover. But then I have some clover in just about every feild that I hay and or graze. Like I said no garantees but that is what works for me.

Sid I have never had any trouble either and I pastured a lot of clover when I was Dairy Farming, if a cow has excess to other grass they usually will pace there selves. I did loss a cow onced but she was not right to start with.

I broad casted annual ryegrass in late May once on a slow growing trefoil field and it took off. You should be able to no-till that in this time of year into the clover, it will wait until the water comes and should come up better next year.

Hayray, I was going to recomend the same thing but I'd also put some Orchard Grass in with the rye grass and drill that into the clover. I just wonder if he didn't get some old or bad Orchard grass seed that had a poor germination, yielding the mostly clover stand.

Most of those clovers, around here anyhow, don't regrow very fast, & the grass should outgrow it that you have there now?

It's late in the year to establish a grass that helps you this year any more - maybe an annual fast growing grass?

I wonder if there is a problem with Orchard grass as I did about the same thing 4 years ago..... the Orchard grass is spotty, the clover the first year was thick but has died out over the last 3 years....

I disked good, applied fertilizer and lime and disked again good.....

The next week I put orchard grass at 100lbs per acre, 5lbs of crimson red clover per acre and one pound of white clover per acre..... .

I've got a fair stand of different broad leaf weeds mixed in now so I'm going to try again this fall....

I see why a lot of people use fescue....seems to grow better around here.....
