What are the differences/advantages of these 2 balers? I take it for granted that they make a better bale than my 269. Comments?

I have a 273 and a friend has a 276. His is a chute load, mine has a kicker(53). Baler works great. If you go to slow in light hay I have found the bale is not the best, but if you keep it full of hay she puts out nice bales. I have had to do some fixing on the knotters, but that is just maintemance, same with the kicker, sealed bearings don't last forever you know. He has had his for 15 plus years, like it fine.

Don"t take bale shape for granted. Given the right circumstances and lack of adjustment any baler can make a lousy bale. And all but a very few can be made to form acceptable bales.

I have been baling hay for many years. On this 269, there are 3 hay dogs on top and only 2 on bottom. The side that is lacking a hay dog, was the side that was coming out long. I modified the chamber, and put a hay dog in place, then made the cutout on the plunger. I also added a piece of flat iron on one of the wedges on that side of the chamber, to hold back pressure on that side of bale. The bale is fairly square now, but if I tighten the chamber up, and make the bale heavier, it is quite square. The problem with this is, if my wife or daughter are helping pickup hay, they complain the bale is too heavy. Another problem is that the chamber chute has the near side half removed, so that the bale will land on it"s side for a bale wagon to pick up. When the bale is lightened up, then rolls off to land on it"s side, it hits on the corner first, and this adds to the banana bale shape. Many factors working here, but the 269 was not known for making the best bale in the world. I think I have made all the adjustments on the feeder tines, and the modifications neccessary, to make the best of the situation. Thanks for the reply!

 269 Q? in reply to Chick, 07-16-2006 04:47:53
Does the 269 have the adjustable feeder back like most other NH balers with feeder forks?

It has a feeder RACK. You cannot adjust one tine or another, but must adjust several at a time. I did bend and straighten some of the tines.

I mean an adjustable panel just in front of the twine box, the rear panel of the feeder RACK area. On many NH balers with feeder forks, this panel can be shifted fore & aft to direct more or less hay to the left side of the chamber.

Yes, this has the adjustable rack. On another NH beler I had, you could adjust individual forks, but not on the 269.

The 273 is a good baler. We've had 3 of them over the past 20 years. The 276 is just a higher capacity baler then the 273, made about the same years. Around here theres more 273 balers then anything else. Never seen a 276.
