Is it possible to date a Massey Disc Harrow by serial number?

Model: 39

Serial: 816 003334

Thanks! I will post this in the Massey Ferguson forum too.

Tim: I know very little about these disks, other than I also bought one last week. I briefly used one of these disks about 10 years ago and I was impressed with it for a light disk. I had been used to big disks. I'll be watching closely on what you find out. I notice my disk has a serial number tag as well. I'll shine it up, at least we can compare numbers. I think my disk is from the 50s maybe even early 60s. I bought it from the original owner but he couldn't remember exactly when he bought it.

Haven"t talked to you in a while hugh! How wide is yours? Does yours have notched discs on the front and plain ones on the rear? What size discs? Thanks for the info!

Tim: Surprise, my disk is not a 39, but rather a 25 with serial number 272 016974. The 9 could be questionable as tag is damaged a bit right by that number. My disk is 3 point hitch with curvred tubular frame going to outer gang bearings, It has the two levers, one on each side of top link hook up for adjusting angle of gangs.

It has 24 - 18" blades, making it roughly 6.5'. Notched blades on front and plain on rear. All blades and bearing are in excellent condition, and to think, all I had to do was match scrap man's price. Disk was parked in 3 feet of weeds along a hedge row, so not much paint left. My disk also has greasable cap type bearings, not sure whether those are steel or wood. I'm wondering if yours is newer version with sealed bearings, or maybe completely different.

As I said before, I know very little about these small disks. I know the one I used about 10 years ago was very effective. This model 25 I have is also very effective. Not much problem to get either one cutting axle deep. I will have a photo of mine scanned and in my file by Tues., I will send you a photo. I'd like to know the same about yours and a photo if you have one. My e mail is open, I didn't notice yours.

How are you folks on the east coast doing? It's 35 degrees here this afternoon, but humidity is down around 40% making it quite pleasant. These Upper Canadians think they're hard done by if humidity reaches 65% for more than a day. I just laugh and tell them they don't know what high humidity is. I'll suffer SW Ontario 35 degrees at 40% humidity anyday compared to Maritime 28 degrees at 90% humidity.

Hugh, this weekend has been good with about 30 dgree temps. It was very humid on Friday but yestrday was okay. Today it is overcast but still quite warm.

I wonder if the first three numbers of the serial number designate the model? The 39 doesn't have any levers and it has a square frame. It also has 24-18" discs with the front being notched and the rear being plain discs and is about 6.5' wide. Perhaps the 39 replaced the 25.

I notice quite a few manuals for yours on ebay. There are a few manuals for the model 39 too but they only seem to reference 8,10 and 12 ft models.

The guy on the massey board says that my disc is a 1965. It seems to have really good paint so it must have been kept inside if it is that old.

I stopped at a local massey dealer yesterday see if I could get some info on it but the young fellow couldn't find a listing for a 39 disc. I will give him credit though, he took some time to look and this dealer wasn't a massey dealer in the 60's anyway.

Btw, I haven't bought this disc yet, I was trying to date it and price some discs as the front ones are quite worn. Amo for reducing the price! Old discs seem to have quite a price range from about 100 to 500 depending on the size and shape of course.
