Sickle bar repair and purchase?

Here is my situation. I have an IH model 31 that on an M Farmal. I don't use it anymore but my uncle loves to mow with it. The problem is about every five acres the cutter bar breaks. I have checked it repeatedly and when turning it by hand it does not appear to be binding anywhere. I have checked all the guards, plates, sections etc. When the cutter bar is off of the machine it appears to have a slight bow in it to me. (Bowed back in the middle if laying on the floor.) Where can I get another cutter bar? TSC doesn't have them at my area or so they said. My uncle thinks that the whole bar (not the sickle bar but the main bar) is slightly bent. I have an old parts mower(model 27 I think). does anyone know if this would fit on the model 31? They look close, but I haven't measured etc. I don't want to spend alot of money on it but my uncle seems to have a great time mowing with it so I guess I need to fix it. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies guys. If I am understanding you right the bar should be bowed vertically at the end? Mine is bowed slightly front to back near the middle. It's not muchand it is not binding the sickle when you turn it by hand. I was just wondering if when the rpm gets higher it was then binding into something. I beleive I'll try to put the entire cutter assembly off of the other mower and see if it will work. Thanks again and keep those pictures coming Alan.

When a cutterbar is set up right, it should bow up at the outer end. That way, when you lift it, it lifts straight and does not droop.

Please explain how you would "adjust" that cutterbar to "bow up at the outer end". I have yet to see a sicklebar mower cutter bar that has any adjustments to bow the outer end. (PS I"m 69 years old and have been around these things all my life)

There are no "adjustments". It has to be physically bent.

Watched a lot of dealers do it is how I learned how. They just put a 4 x 4 or 6 X6 block under each end of the bar and drive over the middle with a tractor tire to put a bow in 'er.

You've never really bowed a sickle bar? Yearly chore if you cut a lot of alfalfa. That stuff is heavy and will have the outer end saggin' on the ground in short order.

When it lifts, that bar should come up and it should be straight.

(PS, I'm 62 and live in hay country). :>)

I guess I still don"t understand. I"ve never bowed a sickle bar. You say the alfalfa is heavy and will have the outer end sagging on the ground in short order. I agree, alfalfa is heavy, but the cut hay doesn"t come up when you lift the cutter bar so what is causing the bar to droop? Some droop is normal on a long bar, but it shouldn"t continually get worse with use. I"ll have to see this to believe it.

is that how they do it - i gotta do that to mine - i have been beating my head against a wall figuring out who could i take this thing to and what will they say when i say i need it straightened - mine now has quite a bow in the wrong direction when raised
