Ok so I am tired of fixing my old 5209 disc mower. I rent hay ground (40-80 acres) that is often harboring a thing we call rocks. Time to upgrade. The price for a New Vermeer 13.25 ft discbine or 11 ft New Holland or a 12ft MacDon Sickle machine are all within a couple hundred dollars. Any opinions out there? I recently hired a man to finish a field with a 489 sickle MoCo right next to what I had mowed with the 5209 discbine. When baling I found I was getting an extra 1000# plus hay in a half mile windrow. Has anyone else Seen any difference. I had one service rep tell me he has seen a difference. I have also seen that of my Custom rd baling the customers with sickles are always a bit better yield. Ideas

Signman: I can"t help you with what I don"t know. Do know there"s a difference between machines, even same makes, particularly varied manners of cutting.
We"ve a new Hesston 1045 hydra-turn disc-conditioner. Absolutely the greatest machine for timely taking off our 1st 200 acres first cutting. I run that baby at 8 mph plus when I�ve the room for it. We�ve also got our old Hesston 1014 hydra-turn mower-conditioner. An ideal machine for our 2nd and 3rd cuttings. A bit slower machine at 4 mph (maybe pushing 5 mph) does a much betted job close cutting and windrowing. But I�ve time. This machines goes into the field again tomorrow.
As for rocks, I never seem to ever finish picking the devils up. Did so, matter of factly, again today.
First mower conditioner on the place was a 12� Hesston self-propelled. Been so good, couldn�t replace it with but another Hesston: and, again. Simple, dependable, easy to repair machines even when forty on more yrs old. I get the auger replaced or rebuilt, it�ll be back in the field also.
I may not have helped you much. But have told you what I have seen and know.
