I am using a 60" Woods BrushBull, front mounted, on a Carraro tractor. I'm pushing rather than pulling the cutter, so it works just as on a conventional tractor when you back up into heavy brush that you don't want to drive through. It works great. The problem is the 3 point linkage. I would like the top link to "float" more than it does, so that the top link won't lift the cutter when the tractor dips up and down on hills. There's a little flexibility built in, but not much. Basically, I don't need a top link at all except when I need to lift the cutter for an obstacle, etc. There isn't enough room for a hydraulic top link to do the job. Has anyone ever mounted a small winch to lift an implement? Sounds crazy, but maybe somebody has tried something similar, so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks for your comments. A chain won't really work for this application. The cutter would be able to rise OK, but it won't have any more slack in the other direction. If it's set up to provide enough slack, the chain is then too long to lift the cutter. A hydraulic top links that are available are simply too long to fit. Hence, my only half-serious question about using a mini-winch.

I have seen a county unit with a set up that might help you. The best I can describe it is this. Imagine a long wire cable in place of the top link. Mounted so the bottom on the hydraulic cylinder is firmly attached to the tractor and on the top of the cylinder is a pulley that the "top link cable " is run over the top. This hydraulic cylinder is a long on like on a loader. By lifting in the middle of the cable it lifts a greater distance than the cylinder moves. I hope you can picture what I an saying and that it may help you.

I`ve seen hydraulic top links make all different lengths. Have one make if you can`t find the right one. I've never had a front mount 3 point but they sure look like the deal for some things.

I've used a chain as a top link so the mower would float freely, but it is unsafe. If front of mower would catch something just right, there is nothing to stop the mower from flipping forward rather violently- could end up with a mower gearbox right about your shoulder blades!

Can you say URBAN LEDGEND?

I"ve ran a chain as a top link on bush hogs for about 40 years, mowing some of the roughest, rockiest, stump filled ground I know of, and have never once seen the tail end of a mower raise up because of it.

It sounds plausable, but just doesn"t happen.

A year ago, over on TBN someone posted a pic with a rear mower tipped straight up.. didn't hit the back of the tractor.. but it dit tip up when it caught a stump. Looks like it pretzled the pto shaft to do it.

Still.. if this is a fron mount deal.. I see less hazards with a chain toplink.. etc..

i agree mf poor, you would have to really be almost trying to get it to flip all the way up. we have always had a chain on the 7 and 8 foot mowers and the last 12 footer i bought is a semi mount with hyd. on thw guage wheels. I love it, more than the 15ft even loosing the 3 ft cut, and never had it flip up either

replace the top link with a chain. needs to be the same lenght as the top link so you can pick up the mower but it will give the movement you want

How about takeing say 6 inches of chain and bolt it to one end of the top link that way you have flex and you can also lift it up as you need. I know on my 3 point bruch hog theres a chain on the top of the machine which hooks to the top link and it should also work for you
