I have a nh 273 that was setting in the weeds for seven years before I got it. It makes good bales, ties great, but when I turn to right I get a clicking noise that turns to a knock the sharper I turn. When I straighten out it goes away, common sense says it would be the u-joints. I have greased them well, but it doesn't help. If I turn to the left it does it to lesser degree, so I thought I would ask here in case someone was like, oh yeah that happened to me, here's what it was. It's hard to bale like this so any advice would be appreciated. James

Two things that are super important: 1- Make sure your drawbar hook hole is 14" behind the end of the pto shaft of the tractor. THIS IS A MUST! Also, make sure the baler ujoints are properly phazed. THIS IS ALSO A MUST! If either of these two items are incorrect, you will be very hard on your driveline and the pto will knock like crazy if they are not correct. This goes for any piece of equipment that you may hook up to that is 540 pto rpm. The only difference with 1000 rpm is the drawbar length should be 16". Steve

Steve, can't you just lengthen the baler tongue, or shorten your pto shaft? I know that my drawbar will not adjust out that far.

My 273 does the same thing. I try to make sure and be headed the opposite direction (turning left) if I have any tight turns in the windrow.

NH and JD balers both have an overriding cluth that allows the baler to freewheel when the baler speed exceeds the PTO speed. This mess is contained in the large slip clutch immediately forward of the flywhell at the end of the driveline. Clicking noise is normal especially when idling down or stopping the PTO. This is to prevent wear and shock to the driveline of the tractor, partiularly on later models that have a PTO brake. Turning can often cause an overrun of the baler relative to the tractor speed. RPM of the tractor can also have an effect, partiularly if you use the throttle to control turn speed. Most NH hay cutters of the 469 era have this same arrangement. I am not sure of the 273, but if you shut off the PTO and the baler continues to run with a rapid clicking noise, you have this arrangement. You could still have some other problem that is not evident, but baling at less than rated PTO speed will cause a lot of clicking, and wearing out of the overruning clutch. Generally using the throttle to contorl ground speed is not really the right approach. (not that you do this) Hope this is somewhat useful.

I have a 273 that does the same thing. When ever I turn right which is the way I turn the most it clicks really bad. So bad sometime that you can here it in the PTO of the tractor Just always thought thats the way it was.

are the pto shaft u joints lined up? if the tractor end has been off and put back on (out of time) that can be a culprit. Also the carrier bearing or (support) as said earlier here can be bad also. i would think that youll find the problem in the pto shaft somewhere

Hey JR, this might sound a little crazy but check your plunger bearings. I've had two different balers make the knocking sound. My balers would knock worse to the right than the left. After checking the u-joints and always thinking I was turning too sharp and the three point was hitting did I realize it was the plunger. But I did not have N.H., I had an old ford 542 and a J.D. 224 doing this. It's usually just 1 or 2 bolts and the plunger comes right out. It also goes back in almost as easy, almost!? Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help Bob,I will look into that. I just want to clear up that it doesn't happen on short turns,it happens when I begin to turn, and gets worse. Thanks, James

Just the nature of the beast, because when you drive straight ahead, the driveline is already cocked at an angle. (right) So turning right just exacerbates the situation. Grease doesn't matter, u-joints have a limit that they can bend. I don't know a 273- is it a three-joint pto? If it's only two, like my 268 WAS, then the problem is worse. I bought a junk 269 and switched the hitch and pto- that's the ony difference between those two models.

It is three joint shaft, I have a massy-ferguson model 12 that will turn way sharper before the clicks. I would just like to get the 273 working good becuase I do custom work and sometimes it's easier to have two balers than move one across the county. By the way the clicking is so bad it sounds like somthing is going break when I begin to turn. Thanks,James

You are right, its caused by the u-joints. Its probably the drive line support. You may be able to reduce the clatter by adjusting the drive line support according to the manuals instructions. Try to keep to short turns to a minimum..... ..... Good luck
