mf 10 baler stopped knotting

I just purchased a second MF 10 that was from a working farm. The first was purchased cheap and with issues that I have not been able to fix in time (plunger is still stuck). Now, since I was going to restore the first MF 10 I had purchased a parts and owners manual. Wouldnt you know it I can not find my owners manual which I am sure would answer these questions, so please forgive me as I need to bale this weekend and cant obtain a new manual in time.

However, I towed it home and last night took it to the field it threw a junk bale, a good one and then nothing but junk. I noticed it would occasionally have two strings on the left and twice I had to pull out twine wrapped around the hook. Nothing has helped. The right side appears to be knotting ok although the last time I stopped, it was loose.

It does appear to be knotting on the left but the twine is cut or broke.

One thing I did that may have screwed it up, is stop the PTO to check the unit and clear grass. After that it would not start until I was ale to turn back the flywheel by hand so the unit could obtain enough momentum to go through the plunger cycle. Would this have messed up the timing. My guess is no as far as the knotter is concerned as it is activated by the clutch when the bale length has been reached.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The previous owner claimed he had it for 15 years, it ran great but at 60 he is tired of picking them up off the field and purchased a kicker unit. I have no reason to believe he sold me junk, but either something went to out of adjustment in the move or it does not like my field. It has not been hayed in years and even my mower complained about the grass quality as it clogged often. I have read that windrow quality is an issue with these units and that could sure be an issue here as well. Hopefully not as I need to clean up this field to start to have good quality stuff.

Thanks

Jason we use a #10 all the time, like Cowman said rust on the billhooks and it won't work. We always put new twine in and if the hay is wet it will not bale, if the hay is right it will not miss a bale...Mike in Exeter Ontario

couple things to check, pull about 20 feet of twine out of your ball of twine and have a look at it, some of the stuff you can buy nowadays is not real good quality, look for real thin spots, and sometimes the bottom of the ball has maybe gotten damp and partly rotted the bottom couple of rounds, if so , toss it and start fresh, your extra strings on the odd bale are likely the knot from the previous bale, as you pull twine from the twine box through the tensioner the springs should move about 1.5 inch only, too much tension on the twine holder discs (they hold the stationary end in the knotter) will sometimes break the twine, it has to be able to give a little as the knot is tied, to little and it will let the twine slip out and you will get a knot on only one twine end, sometimes a few rpm's will help these older units too, they might miss at idle but work better at PTO speed, hope it helps ya

I want through the same thing with my #9 this year & there is a discussion on this site about it somewhere. Like you said, I was told it was field ready when I bought it & a good baler. Test running it stationary with straw it would break the twine, was told by a friend if the knotters were rusty this would happen. Cleaned with scotch bright, same thing, checked all the adjustments, turned by hand & watched it operate, couldn't figure it out. So, I'll try one last thing.... I took 220 sandpaper & polished the jaw hooks until shiny silver, then went over them with the scotch bright, even filed a bur off of the left one. Test run, both tied & came off of the hook!! I never could get a tight bale hand feeding it, they would be tied but very loose. In the field it missed the 5-6 out of about the first 30 bales, after that she never missed another one. I did learn the machine likes a good thick windrow, if the material being baled is thin, my bales would be alittle loose, bowed, & spoungy. Some places I racked two rows together & the bales were about perfect. Hope you have the same good luck I had & get in the field soon. I know exactly how you feel, the more I worked on mine, the more I got worried about it working in the field. This is the first baler I've owned & run, so its a learning expereince. Growing up, I was always the one slinging the bales & not on the tractor. Good Luck.

Jason, have you got a few bales of dry hay in the barn? If not borrow some and practice with it while the hay is drying. Just keep busting the bales up and running them back through.

Jason, I know how it is; when we get a "new" toy we want to run it right away. Mistake when it comes to an old square baler. You should find your Operator Manual or purchase another one first. Then rotate by hand and clean, polish away rust, etc. Then check every adjustment on the baler; ALL adjustments. Make sure the dogs are all working, things that hold the needles home, etc. Clean out the chamber, check all the rollers. Check all the chains, remove and soak or replace with new. Clean all sprockets. There are many other things to do, but this will get you started. By just starting to bale, or test in on some broken bales, you are throwing the dice. You are luckey so far that you didn't have to carry it back to the barn in bukets. If you crash major parts on these old balers it will usually total them out to scrap. Tom

Good advice - guarantee I won't follow it all unfortunately. As you will see in my reply to Nebraska Cowman, I have already snapped a shear pin. Raining too much to see if I damaged anything else.

The other MF 10 was undergoing that level of treatment. This one was purchased as "field ready". I have 20 acres that I need to hay and out of desperation I bought this one and pushed into the field with ony a minor "look over" prior to service.

I may have to surrender and have the local farm repair service come up and do it for me so it is ready for this weekend. As a mechanical engineer and one attempting tractor restoration this is not a desired situation and a bit embarassing.

knotters won't tie with rusty billhooks.

Actually, let me display more of my haying ignorance. I do not know what the bill hooks are and they are not in my parts manual. I am assuming they are the hooks mentioned in the parts manual which look like crab claws. If that is the case they appear fine. In fact the entire knotter mechanism looks in good shape.

I just braved the rain and played some more. By hand feeding and tripping the knotters early, I did get both sides to tie although very loose. The only change I made was checking twine tension - a recommendation from posts in the archives. Its a loose 6" long bale but it is a bale:)

Then I feed too much wet hay and jammed the plunger and snapped the shear pin. No more experimentation today. Which is ok as we are expected to get 2" of rain, severe thunderstorms and a remote chance of a tornado.
