How to make a tight bale NH850? (Allan?)

Need some tips on how to get the bales tighter. I was not happy how they came out.
Way to loose.
I would assume that the chains can lossen up with wear but also maybe I didnt use it right.
Any info on better bales out of a chainer would be helpful.

I have very rarely saw an 850 that made a bale that someone would be proud of. Now that is just my experience and not a bash on chain bales. The first chain baler that I saw make a good bale concistantly was the 855.

Now we use a Massy 1560 (Vermeer 605G) and a Vermeer 505I. Makes a square tight bale at what ever speed you want up to about 7mph. Just don't try to bale any fence posts with them.

i noticed frome using a 851 nh that the bigger the windrow the tighter the bale...and the big windrow and faster helped me make tight rolls of hay

Out of curiosity when your old IH baler would start the bale did it make a tighter bale than your NH chain baler? I'm just wondering if the older belt balers could still make a decent bale.

Old IH241 did make nice bales. The problem with the old belt baler was it decided not to work when I had 20 acres of the best hay down and it wouldnt start a bale. All the hay just plugged up at the compresion roller. hay got too dry.
Too dry or too wet gives them fits.
I had to square bale 900 bales in a day to stay ahead of the rain. Not fun!
A chainer will eat hay no matter what.
So until I can pay for a Vermeer 504 open baler its a chainer for me.

Slowest gear you got, fastest PTO speed you can maintain, and tight as you can get the springs.

Hi Kelly,

Speed your PTO up to 540 rpm and keep it there.

You might have to drop a gear and/or tighten the springs like old has told you.

Kelly, I'm guessing you don't have a manual do you?? Well I do and if you want info I can scan pages for you. Now to your question, if you want tight bales theres a number of things you can do. One is to slow down, my self I had to speed up because my bales where to tight and where weighting around 2500lbs. Yep I use an 850. You can also tighten the springs which will make them tighter. I haven't looked in the manual lately but they list 3 or 4 things to do to get them tighter

I don't know about a chain baler, as I have a hesston 5500, but with it, if you drive too fast the bale's get looser. Dringing a little slower helps, also as the other poster said more string on the bales. On mine you can adjust the tension on the string and I could see if it was not enough tension that wouldn't be good either. And last, I don't think you are going to ever get real tight bales out of a chainer. Every one I have seen around here makes some bales that are a lot bigger than mine, but mine weigh just as much or more.

Bale while the hay is a little tougher or early in morning or later in evening while dew is on. Also putting more wraps of twine on when tying helps.
