Baler driving me nuts.

I needed to bale 4 acres on shares for the neighbor and the baler about drove me nuts the last 100 bales. My old IH 27 baler doesn't handle heavy windrows anyway, but this just added to the frustration. All of a sudden it wouldn't tie on the left side and the knot would get pulled apart. I adjusted the knife and sharpened it, but to no avail. I guess I'll have to check it today and see if I can spot anything. Just needed to vent a little. The field made just a touch under 2 ton/acre of mostly wheatgrass and smooth brome.

I wish I was only having baler problems. First time out the belt broke on the sickle. Then broke a guard. Bearing locked up on the rake. Baler wouldn't tie on right side and the tractor I am using for the baler needs a carb overhaul. To top it off, every time a cut some hay, it rains.

Does the IH have knotters like the JD and MF, or are they the same design as the New Holland?

Chick,

The IH knotters on that era of balers are not the same as JD, NH, and others. They have no wiper are to remove the knot, knot is simply pulled off the billhook by movement of the bale out the chute. Their simplicity is a drawback in heavy hay, by the knot being stripped too fast off the billhook and pulling the knot all the way through.

Also check hay dogs and needle timeing. If hay is springig back it will pull knot out. Is it making complete knot? Twine discs may not be holding the end under pressure. Check that disc tension springs aren't broken. I had that happen once and couldn't see the bottom of the spring so didn't realize it was broken until I took it apart. Grass hay is tough to bale sometimes, especially if really fluffy.

Hayfarmer,

Yes the hay dogs are working and the needles are timed right. I can check the knotters right after it trips and the knot is tied, but the twine isn't cut. I can cut the twine by the knife and the bale is tied correctly when it comes out.

Adjust your twine knife to cut a little quicker it is not cutting the twine and thus undoing the knot.

Success at last. in reply to Delbert, 07-10-2006 07:41:57
I took the knife inserts off and sharpened them on 320 grit sand paper. Put them back in and adjusted everything by the book. Tried it and it was better but not cutting the twine all the way. For some reason I looked through the disk alignment hold in the knotter frame and it was off almost a whole hole. I should have checked that first, adjusted both disks ( they are on tapered shafts). Readjusted the knife and run some old baled straw through. The twine was completely cut on the six bales I tried. Now I have two windrows along the road that will be the real test.

Thanks for all the input.
