Started using plastic twine this season and either the knot connecting the balls comes apart about half the time or the knot gets bunched up on the bill hook. Using bale baskets so I am into the fifth bale by the time I notice it. Any ideas on the best methods of tying and why is it geting caught up on the bill hook?

Ray

always used square not pulled real small trim off excess right into the not,no problems normally and I also run the 7200 per single roll and this makes for alot less ball switching also

Bridon poly twine in the 170knot strength,if you can't get it let me know I get it by the pallet, direct from the company. I am not sure if any other not size comes in it or not as 170 knot is all I ever use. Normally local stores etc only handle the 140 knot stuff that just doesn't cut it for me.

Never heard of anyone useing a sheet bend. When I worked at the MF dealer, we always used a square knot, pulled down real tight, and trimmed. It worked about half the time. It has never worked on my New Holland balers, so i will try a sheet bend.

I tried that sheet bend that Dave showed me and that is a way better knot. I had bad luck with the square knot even after I tied the liven hell out of it.

No matter what knot I use, or how I tie it, my baler (336JD) misses one tie every time it changes balls of twine (yes, they are good knots I do rapelling and they are either square knots or bowlines) Just a simple miss, no problem, picks up on its own the next time. My though has always been that the knot weakens the twine to the point that the twine strength wont take the bale tension.

I have to rethread mine after the twine comes apart - no needle twine left in the twine holder.

I always had the same problem. Always used a square knot and it always came untied. When I got the new 348 manuals I looked through and saw what knot Deere recommended, and started using it this year. Haven't missed one yet. I can't explain the knot and the manual is in the shop and I can't remember the name of the knot. I'll see if I can remember to get it tomorrow.

It just came to me. Its called the sheet bend knot. Follow the link for the how to. Its worth a try for your baler, it sure solved the problem on mine.

Dave,

that link you posted is pretty cool. I went out to the barn and grabed some twine and sat here praticing while that picture rolled through the steps.

thanks,

Ray

New Holland has a different bill hook for plastic, than the sisal uses. The hook itself closes more to grip the plastic better, as the plastic tends to flatten easily. I can tell the difference between the 2 of them, but it is hard to explain, in writing anyway.

In my ford (NH sould be the same) I just tie a square knot, pull it real tight and trim down to about 1/4".

However check for a groves in your needles. I had one that would grab the knot and break the twine. It would tie the end in the twine holder but with the other end loose the swipe arm wouldn't clean it off the bill hook. As the bale pushed out it would tighten up on the bill hook and appeared to be tied to it.

Need to know the model and brand of baler to be able to help. I know on the old JD-14T they make differant bill hooks for plastic

If I have the tension up hard our JD 336 will pull apart the square knot changing balls. Normally no problem unless the knot lines right up into the knotter. Our twine disk timing is off a fair bit but ours doesn't adjust, still ties beautiful on sisal and all plastic thicknesses.

We did have to really mess with the needle clearances and the wiper clearance.
