Picked up a Deere 16A flail chopper - fence row special (Everything is rusted and frozen up!) My plan is to open up the back, and use flails only, blowing the hay right back on the ground. Had it out today, and it will do what I want, but the hay tends to clog around the auger. I have looked it over, and I can't figure out how that auger is attached to the drive shaft that comes thru above the right wheel. There are bearings on the side panel, and on the inner wall of the wheelwell. Even if I could remove the sprocket and the collar on the inside of the outer bearing, I can't move the auger inward more than about 6 inches before I'd run into the blower wheel with all those cleats and so on. About to take the sawsall to the shaft, as close to the inner wheel well as I can, and try to slide shaft and auger inward than maybe I can take it off. Anyone got any other ideas? Would like to take off that blower wheel, too, but that looks like an impossibility due to all that would have to be removed to get that out!

I had a 16A years ago. I'm pretty sure that auger is screwed onto the shaft. I'd say your chances of getting it off are pretty slim. Sawzall sounds good. Cut it next to the auger and take the drive chain off. I wouldn't take the blower out. It acts as a flywheel. Maybe you could weld a cover over the blower hole to keep the hay out.

Thanks Bernie - I hadn"t consdered that possibility. Will grab a couple pipe wrenches, and see if I can back it off before I grab the saw! Reason for taking blower off is to reduce the power required to run. It"s all the old JD B wants to tackle! Tried to remove the weights and impellers on blower, but they have resisted even my impact wrench and BP Blaster!

Do you have an all fuel JD B? One on gas should handle it easy. and that auger should come out easy. made to take out for chopping stalks to ground and to put back in for green choping, don't have time to hunt up my books but go to your Deere dealer and look at their books before you start cutting. our 10 that is an older model hasent had that auger in for years, after got rid of cows while chopping weeds fan broke and was taken out with a torch, couldn't put the auger back it now if we wanted to, and we have no problem with the open fan without the auger, also took blower spout off

Nope, LeRoy it"s a "49 gas job. And yes, that chopper really puts the work to that old B! Tractor is in great shape too! Tried to unscrew the auger today, broke a pipe wrench on it trying. Doesn"t want to come loose. Am afraid that we"ll have to resort to drastic measures. Have been doing some other work on the chopper, and breaking more bolts than I am saving. Needed to replace the tires on the old thing, and that right wheel is a real pain to get out. Had to go to a larger tire than the 6.50/15s that were on there, hope I can fit the new ones on! Now I cqn get at fixing up the main drive pulley!

A 49 JD B gas is what I had to run it with, Had a 51 A on gas and just too big and unhandy, the B handled to good and I don't think there is anything on there to unscrew to take the auger out, just a simple nut on end of shaft. Just take the drive sprocket off the right end of auger and auger should just pull out of bearing. I know there is the instructions in the operators manual for taking the auger out for use as a corn stalk chopper to back on the ground and it is supposed to be something like a half hour job. And the factory size tire was a 5:90X15" and on mine I have 6:70X15", that tire is not hard to get out to change
