Hi all ! Second year doing hay and each time minor irritations develope . I gotta learn to be careful of what I wish for ! I put a lot of fertilizer on the field because I wanted a lot of hay , well I got it and all the headaches that go with cutting it using extinct equipment . I got two rounds in the field with the moco when it sucked a bunch of grass into the sickle drive belt and popped it . It was 4:30pm on July 4th so no replacement belt . I finished the field with the oliver 415 sickle . What a headache ! I have way to many point rows for the sickle . Balled up hay on every one that I had to fix with a pitchfork for 3 hrs on Wednesday . There wasn't enough room for the hay to fall in some spots . I thought it did a good overall job until I raked it and found strips of uncut grass that I'm now tring to avoid raking the hay onto . I had a windrow about every 5-7 feet across the field from a 7 foot sickle and a 9 foot rake . It makes it tough to flip it like that . I think that if the yield keeps up like this that I'll need to upgrade the rake and moco to something a slight bit newer . The old 207 rake works good mechanically but leaves way to much hay in the field and ropes to much instead of fluffing it . And the moco did good but needs some grass guards under it to keep the grass from getting into/under and breaking these $45.00 belts . There's a NH 488 moco and a 256 side rake coming up at a retirement auction soon and was wondering how much I could expect each one to go for ? The ad say's they are " like new " and "shedded " . Thanks ! ...Randy

I can get you the sitrex rakes and about any outher kind wheel rake. You want the cheapy version or the good units your choice. 12 wheel job left this morning.I have a 6 wheel unit that oes very good job raking that I have used for lat few years but going to 14 wheel unit now. Get your self small disc mower and that realll solves problems otherwise give me a call and I can tell you how to mow different with the 415 and all you will have is the last swipe to mow with by just lifting bar little bit. did it for years. Rain while haying just goes with it get used to it. We just did 3200 bales last day and half and is all on wheels and other half is already 40 miles away to customer.third cut starts next week. Today I am rebaling large rounds into small. You want a tedder have those also, but the time I used them they jst destroy what i had inm first place, some guys lovem some hate them,me hate them. If I get where I need that I justr use my batwing mower basically does same thing, in fact neighbor borrow it whle back to do just that with it. Good luck and calm down good thing you don't farm for living Ha Ha Rick

Timing and patients are the 2 things you will never have when cutting hay. If the hay lays down for 40 hours we rake it that morning about 11 and bale what we can at 3 til the dew starts.
Dont be discouraged. We had 2 to 3 inches of rain on the alphalfa and still come out all right.

As far as a rake, we use and old jd 850 side rake for everything. It has a hydraulic lift so we can really get down in the dirt if we have to.

Hi All ! , I just got 165 bales ( I'm making them only 24" long which equals 111 fullsize 36" bales ) out of the field with about 2/3 's of the field left to go . And this was the shortest growth in the field which was why I bailed it first ( driest ) . Got the rack backed up to offload them , got the elevator out onto the rack and it started to rain . Got it all in the barn ( wet ) and it stops raining ! Don-Wi from the post down below might have heard some of those four letter words and then some from my place ! This hay was perfect . Now it's wet . UGH!!! I hope it'll dry by this evening so I can turn it again and maybe not lose to much of it . Then I'll try baling again tomorrow . Could sure use a tedder right about now ! Can crop insurance be bought for hay ? If I lose this cutting that's a hefty chunk of change out of my pocket even if it is only a hobby . I don't need a profit but the idea wasn't to lose the farm so to speak . But I guess that's how it goes . Take care ....Randy

Yes, you can buy insurance for non program crops. Stop by FSA and check out the details. Even with 10 years of yield records and data, it wasnt going to be cost effective for me but others results vary.

Hi Hayman , I don't think 6 acres would qualify anyway . It's not gonna break me but it's annoying . And since I haven't been doing it for years these first disappointments are the hardest ones to swallow . I'm still guessing about which step to do next and how . I should have bailed last night like I planned on but I didn't because my wife thought it was still to wet . I can't feel it . It just felt cool to me . Oh well Life goes on ! Take care ...Randy

Randy,

I have gone to the big wheel rake and will never go back to the bar. I have a sitrex 4 wheel that I have used for about 4 years and done nothing but rake with it ( havent even broke a tooth). I got it for about $600 new. It really works good and pretty easily on the hay.

Hi John , I just looked at that website and I was wondering about the tedder-rakes . Could really use one now since it just rained on what I have left in the field ( about 2/3's ) . You must have the rp4 ? That sounds like the right size for me too for a straight rake . Where did you get it ? I'm not familiar with any sitrex dealers around me . From reading this forum I guess the tedder-rakes break a lot ? Maybe I misinterpreted . But they sound like they are to good to be true . They probably cost more than I can afford too . Which corner of Iowa are you from ? Take care ...Randy

Randy.

North Central just south of Clear Lake. I got the rake from the John deer Dealer in Mason City. They ordered from John Day Company out of Sioux City. I have teddered with this rake before and it does a nice job. Makes 4 little windrows out of one.

We just sold a cherry 488 on a consignment sale. It was always shedded and cut about 30 acres of alfalfa three - four times a year since new. We got 4100 dollars for it. This really was an exceptional machine, but the 1411 that replaced it puts it to shame. I tried to sell it on here for a couple months at $3500.

A NH 256 rake we had sold for $1300 at the same sale.

Hope you can buy that pair right. They're both great machines

If your going to keep the old 990, then do you need a parts machine?

Hi Seth , Man you are one patient person ! Yeah , I'd like to have it but I don't have any idea if I can get there with the semi to pick it up anytime before the end of Sept. . And with the price of fuel it may not be cost effective anyway . It would be 40 - 60 bucks to drive it there and back . I still haven't got a good trailer . I don't remember what's left on that one . Too much growth around it when I looked at it . I'll call sometime , I think I still have your # , is your last four still 1655 ? Thanks ! ...Randy

Thats the correct number. The machine is complete. I don't remember whats wrong, but it could in theory be fixed. i think it was something in the drive system.

Randy

That fertilizer does make a difference in the yield.

As for the mower and rake.

My guess on mower is $2500 and $1500 on the rake.

But I could be way off without seeing them.

Good fertilizer , good rain , perfect crop dry down , Guess what !?? It rained on it today!!! Got 1 load to the barn and it started to rain , every bail got wet going into the barn and the rest of the field that didn't get bailed ( about 2/3 's of it ) . But you are here too so you got wet also . OHHH ...the pain , the pain !

Those prices are out of my league . I need something in the 500 -600 dollar range that works good on hay , it can be a fixer-upper just like these things where . The only new requirement is they have to have good parts availability and not be from Deere . I don't think their parts are as great as they do ( $$$ ) Ha-Ha . Take care ...Randy

I know the pain of those expensive belts.... I ordered both double V-belts today for our NI 290. One is a 64" HB double-banded, and the other is a 50" HA double-banded.

I called the AGCO dealer just to get the specs and a price, they wanted just over $120 for the pair, but I was at Bachall Rubber (they sell Good Year, Parker, etc..) and got them ordered for about 1/2 that.

This machine is our back-up and swamp cutter because 14' is just way too much marsh hay to try and stuff in our baler and chopper for bedding.

Problem is in the swamp though, the stuff gets knocked down by the wind and some gets sucked into the crimpers before the sickel. The belts start to slip because they're really stretched and worn. Then the sickel gets snubbed just because and the problems just escalate untill I'm spitting fire and spewing every 4 letter word in the book.

I hope new belts help out as much as I think they will.

Hi Don , You didn't hear me this afternoon when the rain started just as we ( me and my wife ) got the first bail on the hay elevator ? I know the neighbors a 1/2 mile away could probably hear me cussin' . Every bail went in wet and within five minutes of getting them all in it quit raining ! Someone just seems to have it in for me ;,) .

Good luck with those belts ! We don't want you to have an aneurism ! For me it's a double whammy because that belt is the last one in the line . Everything has to come off to put it on . I hope yours isn't the same way .

I've been up to the swampy area northeast of the dells before but didn't pay much attention to the grass because I was holding onto the truck so the biting swamp birds wouldn't carry me off ! Ha-Ha . Ya don't stand around outside much where I was at . Almost as bad as north Min-y-sot-a . Both beautiful areas if you visit when they hibernate . Take care ...Randy

Well, now that you mention it... I did seem to hear something in the wind...

In order to replace those belts, I gotta remove the jack-shaft. It's a good 3-4 hour job depending if I've got someone to help lift the jackshaft out. It's not too bad, but it does weigh a few pounds...

The guy we buy hay from lives in Larson, right by Oshkosh and Neenah. He lives in the middle of a swamp, bales his cover hay off the swamps in the middle of winter!! Must work because he's been doing it for quite some time now.

Watch regional/nat'l mags like Fastline, etc. for a place in Willoughby, OH that sells belts. Also look at Schoup in Ill. www.schoupparts.com. Also check with JD for their Parts Country line for parts for other makes. I deal with a Gates belt dealer half hour from me- same belts as Gleaner but 2/3 the price. Often in stock, otherwise shipped here.
