I was wondering what brands are the better discbines. For instance John deere, New Holland, Gehl. While I was mowing this downed hay with my NH 489 in low gear I thought it might be worth looking at a discbine. Any ideas would be appreciated.

We've a Hesston 1045. Our 2nd season. Got to watch it. You can easily cut more hay in a day than you can comfortably bale. Nothing seems to phase it even at 8 mph behind an 1850 Oliver.
his our third Hesston mowing machine the oldest a Hesston 500 followed by a 1014. I like Hesston�s; uncomplicated, easy to work on, and good parts availability.

PS: One tough exception, our Hesston 500 has out lived obsolete; but, I am working on it.

We've had good luck with our NH 408 Discbine. It runs circles around the old JD 1209 moco we had. Cuts clean and fast. If the lot is smooth, mowing at 6+ mph is no problem even in the heavy going. The only downside is discbines require horsepower.

Had a NI 5209 for over 11 years, son has it now- it's 16 years old. Fantastic machine, but I'd look at others like NH before buying again, just to compare cutting head and drive system. Later NI (red machines) have a better casting assembly for the cutterhead. Older ones can be retrofitted. Not impressed with the JD discbine- but each machine has good and bad points.

Bought my first one, a John Deere this spring, and I swear by it. It's an older model, 920 (10 yrs) but I knew the owner. Had cut less than 5oo acres of hay and never sat outside one night. Paid 1/3 of what a new one would have cost. I think it pays to wait and find a good used unless you have a huge amount of hay to do each year.

I have a JD 1360 that I really like. They seem to be a popular model in my area, even on farms with very little green equipment.

I bought a JD 1360 about a dozen years ago and have cut thousands of acres with it and not had one problem.
