Decided to put new chains on the ol'68 HAyliner. I knew the timing was off a bit as I started having the plunger hit the safety block occaisionally last fall. So I did the chains and got the book out to time it. With everything timed per the manual the plunger just catches the safety block everytime I run it by hand. There's a bit of play in the knotter drive gear, but nothing big. Plus, the book says the needles should come into the bale chamber when the projections on the plunger are 1/2- 3/4" past the needles. Mine is more like 3-4". Could the timing mark be that far off?

Disregard. It was the the needle yoke rod. It had developed some play and 1 turn out put everything back in the right spot. The needle postition issue was a misinterpretation on my part. If the marks are lined up it has to be right 'cause it won't work any other way. Thanks.

You just answered your own question. If your plunger is 3 - 4" past the needles
that needs to be backed off to the 1/2 inch. then retime and your plunger shouldnt then hit the block. Its hitting the block becouse the needles are past that far. If not it would take the needles out.
