Replacing JD 1219 float spring

Has anyone replaced the large float spring on a JD 1219/1209 mower conditioner? I broke the left outer one and have ordered a replacment. I'm wondering how to remove the large nut on the top side that seems to be threaded onto the spring. Can't find much about it in the operator's or service manuals.

I did that this spring on my NH. The end pieces came with the spring.

Hang on, that job is a stinker! :>)

Not exactly sure what yours is like, but generally they are cast iron ends that thread into the spring. Since your spring is broken, you can just torch the spring away. If you want to unscrew it, put the spring in a vice- so the threaded area sticks out beyond the vice. Don't clamp down on the threaded area. Bad thing about those cast ends is that they are cast, not machined, so usually have a taper to the head and a wrench does not fit well. I usually use a pipe wrench on them.

Thanks for the info. What you have described is what mine is. I don't have a torch available so will have to try the vice method.

A portable grinder could also be used to cut the spring off.

I was able to get the outer spring off using the vice and large wrench. Now if my replacement sping shows up today at the JD dealer I'll be set. Thanks again!
