Hello, I am in the process of putting a deck on a trailer I made out of an old center draft rock picker. I've decked it in 2x6 lumber. what should I seal it with or should I paint it? black, yellow, green? seal with thompsons wood finish?

I painted the frame JD green and wheels yellow to match my tractor (JD 60). trailer is 6x11 and HEAVY.

Just like to hear some ideas on what to do and what color to use. Sorry, IH red and AC orange will have to wait for the next one.

Should I put a 6" or 12" or no side on it?

I'd say paint it what ever color you want too. Black would look good with the green & yellow, make the sides as tall as you need to. Sounds to me like this project is more for fun & show that function anway. What the heck, leave it unpainted? I have no clue as to who has the best outdoor paint to use??

Do NOT paint it! For the reasons that Errin mentioned and also because it makes the deck VERY slippery! You can seal it with Thompsons or linseed oil.

Personal experience is paint is bad, very bad. Paint will create a barrier that keeps water out. At the same time it keeps it "in". Any scratches, nicks, rubs or bare spots (like underneath) let the wood soak it up. The paint then prevents it from drying out. Over time it will get soft as the wood rots out. I have had good success with sealing, staining, or oiling (including old motor oil). What ever you end up with it needs to penetrate the wood not just cover it. Regular oil based paints dont penetrate enough to protect the wood. My guess is the asphalt paint souNdguy uses has enough oils in it the wood soaks it in good (acts more like a sealer than paint). I would go with a good oil seal and stain if you like.

Can't go wrong with black asphalt fence paint. I have 4 years on my trailer with black asphalt fence paint.. with no signs of decay.

A 5 gallon barrel of the stuff is usually 15-20 bucks at a farm store.

Use a roller you plan to throw away.. not an expensive washable one....
