fixitforfree, First of all, in just grass, Sharp Blades will be the biggest one single point for a well manicures look. Unless you are mowing over saay 10 acres, Gear down, throttle up!!! these old shredders are as I said before....Idot/bullit proof. So do not worry about running at high idle. the governor will keep ypour engine at 1750 or so and the shredder will run at 540 in and 540 out if it is 1:1 as they say. I have seen these old girls in trash 3ft tall, behind a Farmall M or H and just smile. So I would not think thaat swappin out gear boxes is worth the time ans surenogh the money. Rhino should be able to get new drive line or update to a new style of some variety or another. That shear bolt setup was pretty common back then. Yes I pull a drag type now! A Rhino SR-15M, on 540 gear boxes, we use a JD 4230 (100 hp) tractor to pull it, I have pulled it with my 966 also. Either tractor will swing the pi$$ out of this ol girl. I shred down all weeds/grass, and trees up to 4in diaameter, and 8 ft tall or so. We are in a pasture reclamaation mode right now so we do require a lot of a shredder, Yes I have twisted 2 drivelines, blown 3 sets of slip clutches, and thrown 3 different blades. The blade bolts are a weak point in my opinion, But I run one harder than most folks. the average farmer/rancher won't work one as hard as I do. All in All this is the toughest shredder I have ever run,Period, Years ago some of the first grass mowers were ground wheel drive. Old truck rearends with a blade afixed to the front pinion yolk, pointed downward. with a hitch assembly welded on to hook to a tractor. Also to keep a well manicured pasture area, Don't let it get very tall between mowings. The taller the crop the harder it is to get it chopped up to look manicured. hope this helps. Later, John A.
