I bought a Ford 515 sickle bar mower a while back and mounted it on my ford tractor. The breakback bar wont reset or grab in the mow position. Does anyone have pictures or a good explanation of what the parts are that are supposed to grab or hold and that are not working? I was thinking of dissasembling the bar and spring, but I really dont know what to look for and whether parts are available to rebuild the bar? I do have the 515 manual but it does not cover rebuilding the breakback bar.

What is the mechanism that grabs and holds the bar in the retracted position? How much force should it take if backing up to get the bar to grab? I presently have it off the mower and I can not get it to grab.

That hook on the front end of the trip mechanism is the catch, we more often have more trouble w/ it not releasing than not catching. My guess is that there's alot of loose rust clogging up the works. Loosen the 3 spring bolts off until they are just about to come off, and pull the bar back as far as you can by hand. hose that whole works down w/ wd-40, and work it back and forth a while, then blow some air up in there to get the stuff out. it should move freely. you should also hit that catch some and make sure it's loose.

Have you done what it says on page 10 about adjusting it?? It could also be something as simple as some junk stuck in or around those parts.
