White 5100 Planter

I've been looking at cutting down on the number of acres of hay we have and putting a lot of it into a rotation of corn and beans. I've found a White 5100 4 row wide planter that is in fair condition. It is set up for no-till.

Some of the coulter bearings are bad and there is a fair amount of slop in the arms hold the wheel next to the openers. The paint is decent and there are no welds.

What are the pros and cons of this series of planter? How much should I spend on it?

I have a 4 row wide and a 8 row wide 5100 planter. The 4 row is set up with a 5 row splitter unit for planting beans in 19" rows. I have the pto hyd. pump for running the blower. It takes very little air to run the pump. Make sure your air pipe connections stay tight, and when changing plates from corn to beans make sure you have the 3/8" bolt good and tight that holds the plate on, you don't want the plate to slip as it rotates. Everything else is just a matter of regular maintainence, bearings, etc. Very simple and accurate planter, no moving parts in side the boxes. A good 4 row around here goes for maybe $1000.

Thanks for the response and good information. Did you purchase the 5 row splitter or did you fab it? The reason I ask is because it looks like the smallest splitter currently offered is for a 6 row. I'm not certain if a splitter makes sense for us economically because of our small acrage, but if I find one at the right price, it could be worth it.

Mine is a factory 4 row unit, it could be used behind a 6 row narrow planter also, but would have to re-space the planter units.
