Phase 2 of Operation Kelly gona get some cows. Has begun. Stand back behind the yellow tape and observe as the Dummy...er I mean man with a dream. Works to attain his goal of raising some Heffers.

If she lets me get this fence up. Cattle are gona come.

I am about 4 months ahead of you. I finally took the plunge back in March and jumped in headfirst. I had built a small herd of 13 cows and the bull. I also had 5 heifers kept from last year that I was going to breed.

Went out and bought 30 more bred cows. Leased 150 acres of weedy bottom ground down the road and started mowing to knock the weeds down.

I have 5 cows that still haven't calved but are looking close. Of the 30 I had one prolapse so she went to the sale. One had the calf breech so I lost the calf, but the vet said she would be fine and should be kept. I had another one calve and then lost her. Vet wasn't sure what the cause was.

Hoping to sell the calves in the fall, cull back to about 40 total cows/heifers and pay off the note on the 30 cows. Will see how it works out in October for sure.

I would strongly recommend working on the rotational grazing as well - 2 or more pastures. At least lay out the pasture so you can divide it later.

More grass, much much less weeds since I split mine into 3. Big improvement.

Good plan there, I finally got some heifers bought myself this year. I guess I should say, the bank owns some heifers and I take care of them...:-)

Fence first? -Good, fence off 2 pastures areas to rotate graze. Then water and shelter, then a couple calves might follow you home. Or a couple sheep if you want to start smaller. RN.
