JD 5 Ferguson 30 Question

I gave a buddy of mine a JD 5 sickle mower and he rigged it up to fit his Ferguson 30 tractor. Works pretty good because position control is not required with this mower - BUT....

He tells me that the tractor is to fast, even in first gear, for the mower.

This doesn"t sound right to me. Surely the speed of a Ferguson 30 and this mower would be OK. BTW, I don"t think that the "30 has a hi-lo range.

Any advice I can pass along?

Thanks!
Bill

I had a Ferguson 30 and while I did not have a John deere mower on it I had a Coop mower that is similar to the Deere and Mowing speed was Third Gear or at lowest second gear, 1/3 throttle. We had a Ford 2N with Oliver 3 point hitch mower and mowing speed with that was third or road gear, 1/3 throttle, also a 46 model JD B tractor with the high speed transmission and mowing speed with that Coop mower on it was forth gear, 1/2 throttle. A horse drawn mower would be the only thing for that slow of a speed. He does not have that mower in operating condition, set it up correct and sharp and hit 3rd gear and go.

I have one piece of advice...maybe tell us how fast the durn thing goes??? The JD5 mower has to be set up properly to cut right. Sharp knife, angled just slightly upward from horizontal for my conditions (mixed grass and alfalfa). I will also tell you that if he is trying to cut early in a place with a lot of dew he will have trouble in most any gear. Honestly do not believe that the tractor is likely to be too fast in 1st gear.
I use 2nd on the MTA. IMHO, it is a setup issue or damp hay. Check the manual for setup and/or start cutting after 11 AM.
