Ok,I've got over 800 bales out of the 281 now and with the tensioner pressure set at even 160lbs. or so I'm averaging 48/50 lb. bales. That seems awfully light for a 16"/18"/36-38" bale. My other baler would regularly beat that with smaller bales. I'm running decent sized windrows and quite often at times thick enough to completely plug the old Case. What am I missing on the bale weight?
Shouldn't this thing produce 70-100 lb. bales?

So far it's only missed tying 2. YEAH! It's a lot smoother acting baler, the lack of exhaust blaring right behind me is wonderful, and peace of mind is returning.

I also have a 282 and regularly put out 95 to 100 pound bales. If your hay is too dry you can't do that. I bale Timothy Alfalfa mix hay. I run 750 to 1500 pounds on tensioner. Are the strings tight on the bales? Do you have restrictors in the bale chamber? How many? I think I have either 3 or 4 sets in mine. I tighten down long bolts on the rear of the tensioner also. If your strings are very tight already, you may not be able to get more in the bale. Some types of grass don't compress that well. In my area we often bale at night to get some moisture into the bales and hold leaves on the alfalfa. Check your manuel for other options.

I'll have to check the dealer again on the pressure gauge. The said a 12 bars range on the gauge, that's about 180+/- lbs. That's why I went with a 200 lb. gauge. It had a 1500lb. that was in bad shape. Maybe there's a early/late issue happening?

i have nh 282 wire which is 16 X 18. in first cutting grassy hay it produces 60 - 75 lb bales.
i pick up with nh 1033 balewagon so length is not
extra long. what are you baling and what is your
bale length ? how dense are they packed ? is puff balls then your hydraulic tensioner is not correct. i think i have oper manual and knotter
serv manual if you have other questions.

Ok you got to wondering again about the pressure. This is Meadow Foxtail/Fescue/Orchard Grass and bales are 36-38" long. I think they are definitely too loosely packed, not like a puff ball but not a real snug bale either. My manual says to try it at 100psi and see, but I just realized we got going baling and I didn't check to see if the tensioner was bottoming out of it's hyd. range. Need to check that too. I asked a buddy to look at it yesterday when it was running and he pretty much passed on it. I like the twine a bit tighter than they are so I upped that a touch. Where are you on tensioner prssure setting?
