I was fixing some fence today when I saw my neighbor pull into the ajoining field to cut some hay. He cut around to where I was and stopped. I noticed he did not ahve the tarp that covers the cutter bar on his disk mower. I figured something had happened to it and offered to let him use mine until he got his fixed. He told me he took it off and that the hay would cure quicker without it on. He went ahead and the hay did appear to look as if a teddet had been ran over it as it came off of the cutter bar. I told him I wouldn't take a chance. It looked unsafe as all get out to me. Do any of you all know anyone who had been injured doing this? Just curious.

Can you spell STUPID? I've lost 2 back windows and 2 door windows in our mowing tractor. I've seen blades dissappear. I've had chunks come out of a disc, throwing the blade retainer and all. The curtain certainly doesn't stop everything, but I sure wouldn't deliberately take one off. That will make absolutely no difference to the job the mower does. Those curtains seem to fall apart over time. Right now I have a piece of 1/2" thick conveyor belt tied to the front of my mower. It seems to work OK. The trick is to not let it hang too low, or it pushes the hay down and the mower can't cut properly. It does catch most of the airborne particles..... Never never never take one of those curtains off. It's there for a reason. I've been beened by some very small stuff, and it bloody well hurts.... and that's being lucky when it only hurts a bit. You see a sheet of safety glass shatter 18 inches from you, you think twice.

There have been many rear cab windows lost to rocks flying out from under the curtains of rotary mowers, even when everything is in place as it should be. To operate a disk mower with no curtains at all sounds like foolishness to me. It doesn't matter how nice it leaves the hay if you are in the hospital having a rock removed from your skull instead of out raking and baling.

Fellow took an old house screen & mounted it on the fender of his open station JD. Protects him from a lot of stuff flying off the disc moco.

I am lucky that I have a tractor with a cab. Even with the curtain on the front of the deck I have had some stones hit the rear window that sounded like a gun shot.
