Well I'm probably going to be rebuild a hay wagon this weekend and need to know how long and how wide works best for square bales. The baler is a JD-14T if that makes any differance.
Thanks. Been thinking about 14 or 16 foot long and about 7.5 feet wide. What say you

The last three racks we've built are 8.5x16.5'. We usually stack the bottom row three wide then go to two wide with one bale sideways the rest of the way up. Some of our barns aren't very tall so we usually only stack wagons six rows high but we can still get 150 bales on a wagon, if we go seven rows high we can get 170 bales on.

8 foot by 16 foot is common- makes it easy to lay down five bales to start with- either two left, two right, and one lengthwise in the middle, or put four down, with the fifth lengthwise either on the left or right. As you stack up, you reverse the pattern, and each layer ties in the one below. Depending on your bale size, just do the math to figure out how it fits. Generally, if you have a bale about 34-36 inches long, an 8x16 wagon works well. Some like to go to 18 feet, gives you room to stand on the front to throw the top layer on.

Here is a photo of one of our 20 foot long hay wagons. It has 205 bales on it, but we have put as much as 275. You put two people on the wagon and you don't have much of a problem loading the wagon.

I guess I should post a picture of my work too. This is ansd 18' wagon we borrow from an old widow down the road. This load was stacked last year, didn't get it as full as I noramlly do, but it was getting dark and damp so the bales were getting really heavy really quick.

Sounds about right. 8 ft wide is nice if your barn doors will stand it. 18 ft long is the maximum. over that it gets too far to walk stacking bales. I can pile 200 bales on an 8 X 18 flat rack with no backstop. The first courses overhang the rack 6 inches or more.

All of our wagons are 8'. We stack 3 wide for the first 4 layers then start to taper up to the 6th layer which is 2 wide. On the bottom the bales may overhang 2-4" but a 9' wagon would be just too wide.

Most of our wagons are 16' long, but we use one that's 18' and we have another set of 18' stringers to build another one. Might do it this week yet some time.
