Replacing Bush Hog blades

I have a 6" tow behind Bush Hog (Bush Hog brand) which could use new blades. I don"t know the model number but it is definitely a Bush Hog mower. Underneath it has what appears to be round headed bolts that face up to the mower deck. There"s no access on top of the mower deck to get to the top of the bolts. Is there a secret to removing these or am I just dense??? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Hi ..Mine doesnt have an access hole either. I was able to take the nut off the bottom and take the whole plate and both blades down off of the splined shaft, This is my first bush hog and my question is, should the blades be tight, in the straight out postion or should they float on the shoulder bolts, and the spinning will make them swing out. I thought mine were locked straight out, but this year they both swing real easy, any help would be greatley appreciated. Are the shoulder bolts worn? Thanks Ray

I got a 6" Bush Hog brand mower that I wanted to change the blades and decided to remove the whole bottom from the shaft....well, that was a mistake cause I had to cut it off...I couldn"t pull the spline off with any puller that I had....and worse yet...standing up when I cut it off and it smacked my foot on it"s way to the ground and left me hobbling around for a few. Of course cutting it off with heat meant I had to put a new seal in the lower unit. It had two of them and they went in too easy and of course it leaked. I parked it and used another. Probably should have put some Loctite around the outside of them while it was clean and dry but it had worn out my mind, so I parked it and got another. Fred OH

Fancy is right there should be a hole, about 2-3 inches in diameter about 6 ichs out from the gear box. All the old bruch hogs I get in have the hole there and no cover plate. You maybe one of the lucky/unlucky ones that still have the plate there and it may take a good bit of cleaning to even find it

Found the access hole....or should say found where the access hole was. Someone had conveniently welded a plate over it. Don't know whether to go to the trouble of replacing them or just getting the old grinder out and going at it! Gotta love old equipment.

I'll NEVER_EVER put new blades on one again - it aint worth it. I'll angle grind them until there's nothing left. By then, I'll need a new one anyway!!

When/if I sharpen the blades up I flip it over and the use an angle grinder to do it. But in my area its almost worth less to sharpen them because of all the rocks

Should be an access hole near the center gear box it may have a cover plate over it. Be carefull a man was killed near her when the bushog fell on him while he was changing blades.
You will probably want to get new bolts with the blades most of the time they will hang in the hole enough for you to get around to the top and start the nuts.

Mine had no access hole and I had to cut one in the steel that mounts the gearbox.
You"ll need a good impact tool to break those nuts loose - and the bolts will have to be pressed or pounded out. Be sure and support the ring the bolts mount to so you don"t bugger up the gear box shaft. Plan an "all day" for this job as it takes a while!!
