NH 276 baler -torque setting on pto slip clutch pi

can anyone help--manual for baler says pto clutch should slip at 300lb/ft--any idea what the torque should be on the pins that retain the tension springs should be to achieve thiso

Mike, you have to measure the torque required to make the clutch slip, not the torque on the individual bolts. My baler repair manual has instructions like use measurement of length of pipe/rod/bar times the reading on a set of pull spring scales, like 100 lb scales. Your example would be to use a rigid bar of some sort, mark it with two marks exactly 3 feet apart. Center one mark in center, hook scale up at other mark, then pull the scale until 100 lbs is read. 3 X 100 = 300 foot lbs and should just start to make the clutch slip. Repeat and tighten/loosen individual bolts as required to fine tune the reading. Probably did not write this very well, but my manual calls for 400 FtLbs and uses 4 foot times 100 lbs to adjust it. more complex than i thought
do you mean place a bar against the pin at mark zero, attach pull spring to pin( how is this done?) and pull spring( which is drawing out the clutch to slip) until it reaches 100lb at the 3 foot mark on the bar.

have i got it?

Mike you have completely missed the point. It is very easy to do and very hard to explain. See if you can get NH manuals for your baler. Like Rick said, best money you will ever spend. After you get the manuals post back. Tom

Why not drop the $20 on an operator's manual? Detailed description of this proceedure, knotter troubleshooting, and more. Best money you will spend on that machine since you bought it.
