Help Please! Vermeer 504 C Baler

I brought the 504C baler home to try before buying and have run into a few troubles. Please any acvise or help would be great.
It turned out 4 perfect bales, and then...a lot of hay gets tossed between the belts and
it keeps plugging up around the front belt roller just above the rubber feed roller. there is a plate just above the feed roller with guide bars on it, the hay also comes out of the bale chamber and jams between this plate and the first belt roller. I have tried various pto and ground speeds over the last few days and nothing seems to help.

I had similar problems with my 504c. This was my first time using a round baler. I was finally able to bale my 9 acres. Got 18 bales. I found the bales easier to start in the morning and evening when the dew was on the windrow. Couldn"t get one to start midday with the same problem you describe. I"m certainly no expert (far from it) but seems each baler has it"s own peculararities to learn. I"ve heard the new ones are much easier with open throat. Also quite a bit more money. I paid 500.00 for the baler and 300.00 for 4 new inner belts. I can at least do it myself.

Hi Ken,
Sounds like you got lucky. They wanted 2,500.00 for this baler. I figured it would have needed 500.00-1,000.00 worth of belts and hydraulics, I don"t think it would be worth it. If I could have got it for 500.00, well that would be a different story. I have 80 acres to bale and this particular 504C was giving too many headaches.

Thanks for all the great advice. It seems that this baler does not like the hay too wet, or too dry. the belts are too loose or too tight the pickup head is too high or too low and the tractor and/or pto speeds are too fast or too slow. Uh yep, that"s way too fussy for me. I already spent $200.00 in parts and 12hrs trying to figure this thing out. Better to cut my losses so back she goes. Now if I could only find something decent and cheap, oops wrong time of year I know. Thanks again.

Most likely the hay is too damp or the belts are too tight or loose. There should be an adjustment on the tongue of the bale (by the springs) to set the tension on the belts. You should be able to go to the back of the baler and push the belts in about 12" before you get resistance on the tension rolls. Dad alsways liked the belts looser than I did. When our old 605D would get grouchy you had to start at low RPM and take it easy.

If you are looking for a good deal in a cheap baler in a 5x4 bale, I would not look at anything older than an F,G or H Vermeer. These are also the same as a MF 1440. The I is also a great baler, but will cost more. There are other baler types that are good also, but we have always custome baled with Vermeer.

Not ever again, cut my teeth on a 510 John Deere.

Hi Walter,

I was hoping to replace my existing baler...yep you guessed it a JD 510. Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire! I want someting that is not as fussy as the 510 and I really don't need such big bales anymore.

I've got to admit, I'm pretty ignorant about these bale starting problems, and the methods people use to get around them. I never have any bale starting problems. Since you haven't bought the 504c as yet, do yourself a favor. Buy a Claas, and you'll be just as ignorant as me.... Or at least buy a more modern open throat type of those belted things so many seem to love. They work quite well, from what I hear.

BTW, from what I've seen and heard, your hay is probably too wet..... Neighbour has one of those old devils, and it doesn't like wet or damp hay.

I have had that problem with my 504f when the belts got to short from repairing them. Try this. Drop your bale and stop the teeth on the very bottom. Drag some hay forward, back up start pto then take off. It will start a bale. But do your self a favor and stay away from this baler, you will fight it the rest of its or your life. For just a little more money find a 505i and you will smile. I have no ties to Vermeer this is just my suggestion.

I know a guy who would run his baler across three or four windrows to get the bale started

Hopefully 504guy will jump in on this, but one thing I read is the hay has to be very dry for those closed throat balers to start a bale right...

Used to have a 605C Vermeer closed throat baler--bought it new. After a few factory modifications, it was easier to start a bale. However, the hay or stalks needed to be just the right moisture. If it was, it worked flawlessly. If the product was a little too moist or even a little too dry, the baler was a terrible frustration!
