The universal joint on my 5 foot fast hitch brush hog needs to be replaced, as bearings are out. I can get the whole new 4 sided "X shaped" deal at Farm and Home for 14 bucks, but how do I get this old rusty thing apart?? Thanks, Cmore

If you have access to a cutting torch, cut the cross out with the torch, then allow the yokes to cool.

When the yokes have cooled, the cups usually come out pretty easily. Then, clean the rust out of the yokes with emery cloth, so the new cups will go smoothly into place. (DON'T remove good metal, just the rust and dirt.)

I use a little gear oil as lube, so the new cups don't "gall" on the way in.

Theres a number of way to remove the old ones, but heat helps a lot if they are rusted in badly. My self I usto use a big hammer and just beat the _____ out if them till they came out. Then when I got my big vice I started useing it and a socket that would fit in the hole where the cap sits. Now days I use a 12 ton press which has the hammer way and vice way beat hands down. Just a few ideas for you, but heating them up and then letting them cool will go a long ways
