Guess you could say what your missing is the fact that a wood pitman is there as the weak link in the system to keep you from brakeing parts that cost say $300-500 plus. What brand/type of mower is it?? And you know me I always do my best to tell it to poeple stright and want to see things done the right way or not at all, or at least thats the way I do things and was taught to do it either the right way or don't do it at all

With all due respect I am not sure you are 100% right. I have seen sickle mowers with a metal pitman arm and they lasteed for sometime. these mowers had either a belt drive or a slip clutch that was the weak link. What I don'r see mentioned in any of the replies is the fact, that if a mower keeps breaking pitman arms,something is worn or out of adjustment.

Well yes of course if it came from the factory with a metal pitman then thats anohter story but, and thats the big part is what should it have. If metal by all means put it back that way, but if wood put it back that way. So yes I agree with what your saying to a point that do it as it was whne new, Right??
