Unicorn Log Spliter

Hello -- I have Recently inherited a Unicorn Log Splitter by Thackery -
I can see the danger but I have another stand alone splitter. I am told these Unicorns have some considerable power for excessivly stubborn chunks so I'd like to get it working on a limited use basis. - I have no Paperwork or Documentation. It was mildly Frozen. I used Tri Flow several times puddled in the bearing depression with the unit balanced Verticaly. It took very little to Free it and it seems to spin Freely and quietly. The Main shaft has two bearings -- sealed on the Outsides -- They are in a housing that the pipe wedge bar attaches to -- The bearings are about 5 inches apart. The bolt that holds the pipe housing in place screws into a chamber between the two bearings. My Question -- Is Lubricatant supposed to be in that Chamber ?

That bolt hole would serve as a filler plug. It is Fine thread. I don't know if the bearings are sealed on the inside. Tri Flow will slowly seep and move thru the bearing, I dont know what SAE Grade Oil to use either. If its not needed because the Bearings are sealed and lubricated I fear it might just make a mess.

Any Help appreciated.

This is not for certain but I am 99% sure that there is no lube. in between those bearings. I
owned one and looked in the book all those years
ago but never added anything. People told me I'd
be dead if I used that thing-but I split lots of
tough wood and never saw a danger. Let's face it,
you need to be reasonable with anything. They also
had those for Garden tractor axles,Car and pickup
axles and special applications. Happy splitting,

Yes it is sad that the new electric Drill that you buy must come with a red tag attached to the cord that says "Do not use in the bathtub or hot tub." LOL
