Thanks for all the good advice. It turns out that the baler is actually a Vermeer 540 "C" and not a 540 "G". is this a substantially different baler? is there any thing I should watch out for, and are there any tricks to starting a bale or setting up and running this baler?

The 504C makes 4' wide by 5' tall bale. I would guess by now the belts have been cut a little and the bale is short of 5'. This is a closed throat baler and your hay must be dry to bale. If your hay is right it will bale fine. Check the condition of the rubber roller and the belts as they are the most expensive wear items. Also check the condition of the gear box. They are a good little baler, just remember that it is over 30 years old and you can run as fast as the new ones. They don't take much horsepower, I know of folks running them with 35 fergusons.

Yup - older design on the C, starter rollers, harder to start a bale, hay needs to be good & dry or you have issues.

The F series was the first 'open throat' design which is better.
