I have a very old John Deere 4-row planter, probably built in the 1950's or early 1960's. The seed buckets are pretty much gone due to rust. I think, but don't know yet, that the lower units could be made to work. Where is a good source for parts for these old planters?

Thanks,
Patrick

From 42 to 56 the 4 row is a 490, 57 up to early 60's is 494, late 60's 494A and the plate type 1200 series use the same hoppers, did it have the round can fertilizer hoppers or the big box type for 2 rows each? Round can is 490 and either clutch (most likely) or hydrolic lift, 494 series only hydrolic lift.

Dont know what model you have but I see lots of old John Deere 4 row planters on the photo ads site here. They go pretty cheap sometimes, could probably find a parts unit there if you keep your eyes open.

JD will still have these parts. I would suggest getting a manual. Be prepared for sticker shock for the manual and parts. JD has a high opinion of the value of parts for thse old planters.
