NH 273 pickup doesn't turn

Hello all. I just purchased a 273 at auction. It hasn't baled in several years, but has had little use. The pickup doesn't turn. The clutch is engaged, and all chains are in place. There is a cast piece behind the drive sproket that doesn't turn when the baler is running. When you put a pipe wrench on that cast piece, you can make the pickup turn. There seems to be some disconnect between the drive sproket and this cast housing. What's wrong here? Thanks, -DB

That is an over-running clutch mechanism. There are 2 spring loaded pins in the inside cast piece that are supposed to push out into grooves in the outer sprocket. The pins are obviously stuck in. You can take a hammer and beat on the inner cast piece and hope they come out. However, over the years I have not been very successful doing this. Be prepared to remove sprocket to get to the pins. Remember, LOTS of pentatrating lube. Steve

On the 273 can they handle plastic twine or am I stuck with Sissle?

Thanks. I see what you are talking about with the spring loaded pins, and will pull that apart today.

Also, yes the 273 will handle non-sissal twine. I bought the better (heavier?) version at New Holland, and started using it sucessfully with no adjustment whatsoever. Thanks -DB
