I have been have the knifehead break after just a couple of acres, 3 times this since last year. I see in the repair manual where a worn wobble gear box could cause this and checked it for play while on the machine. It did have some vertical play.

I got the new wobble gear box ordered, expensive! Last night, I got the old one off. Found out one of the bolts that holds it on the frame was broken, bottom right, also the bottom left was not very tight. I know the gear box is worn some, has some vertical play, maybe 1/8th to 1/4th inch. Would this cause the bolt to break or would the broken bolt cause the knife head failures. It would be nice if I didn't have to replace the gear box.

While I have the machine wide open, should I absolutely replace any other parts. Belt? How can you tell if the chain is worn too much? Sprockets?

Yes, that play in the arm could cause the bolts to break. The bolts would not cause the wobble arm play. However, there is one other thing you should look at. Check the bushing in the end of the wobble arm that the bolt goes thru. BE SURE TO LOOK AT THE UNDERSIDE. Is the bushing in good shape and not broken or cracked? They have been a problem on the 489's. Steve

Thanks. That is good to know. Sounds like I am doing the right thing by changing the gear box. The bushing looks good. I am getting a new arm with the gear box also so I will probably get the bushing with it too hopefully.

Your problem may well be the bolts, only way to know is replace them and give it a try. As far as chains and being bad one way to check is to pull up on the chain in the middle of a sprocket. If it pulls up say 1/4-1/2 inch the chain is bad. Now on the sprock if the teeth had real sharp tips on them to the pint they have a knife edge they are bad.
