About a year ago I purchased a Bush Hog Squealer Series SQ720. The Operator's Manual said check the gearbox oil every 40hrs. Today I went out to check the oil only to find that the gearbox appears to be empty. In the maintenance section of my Operator's manual there is a sticker pasted over the orginal Gearbox information. On this new label it indicates the capacity is 2 quarts. In the back of this Operator's Manual under the Dealer Assembly it indicates the capacity is .9 quart. I suspect that the dealer either put in no oil or .9 quart instead of the 2 quarts. Also did not see anywhere that this gear oil should be drained and replaced as a maintenance item. Has anyone got any clearification on this. Cannot tell if I have a problem because of low or no oil, but but pretty sure I will have premature wear because of it.

my old 60 inch Squealer has flat metal plate on top with pipe plug in so you can stick a twig in to check that there"s oil inside, I check it before first run in springtime and try to check it every week

oil usually covers the gear but leaves good amount of room for expansion

lift the mower up and see if inside of mower is coated with oil, that stuff usually makes a big mess if it leaks out past the seal

There had to be some lubrication in the gearbox because it would not have ran 30 minutes without locking up. I'd say you have a seal problem if it is empty now.

Every mower.. or implement with a gearbox I've ever bought has come with an empty gearbox. Hope you originally oiled yours.. or at least checked it for oil.

Many units either don't have a drain plug.. or have a bolt in the casting that holds the flange down tot he deck, that will be drilled thru to the cavity, to drain the oil.

Hopefully your box had some residue fromt he factor in it.. otherwise seals and bearings may be shot.

Look on the box.. there should be a fill and level check plug.. or dipstick/fill plug.

Fill with correct lube to fill level plug.. or dipstick location.
