Sickle Bar Rock Guard Question

Hello,

I am curious to know how often folks change these out? I have an IH 21 mower that mounts on my Super A. This mower hasn't been used in about 20 years or so now. I have completely disassembled it at this point and am rebuilding it. Not restoring... Painting parts as needed so I can USE the unit. Not for show. I am replacing all the Knives and other various items.

But to be honest I don't quite have $150 to replace all the rock guards! SO I was wondering if there was an easy way to tell if I could keep using the ones on it. THey are rusty of course. I didn't know If I could hit the edge with an angle grinder. At least the ones that are not serrated. (SP?) The serrations are not that "clean" or sharp anymore. Just curious for some opinions. I will be mowing off about 10 acres with it in 2 months or so.

A few things to look out for - 1) if you decide to NOT change the guards make sure the sections ride down as close as possible to them . A .010 gap is about all you want or no wider than the thickness of your fingernail or a little less . 2) If you DO decide to change out the ledger plates make doube sure you have the right rivets to put back in , some rivet sizes are not made anymore . Most all ledger plates are held in with size 5-1/2 rivets which are widely available but some ( like mine ) are size 6 which are extremely hard to find . 3) Make absolutely sure the bar is sraight and align the guards from the inner to the outer , it's easier that way . The guards on my sickle still have the original ledger plates ( maybe over thirty years ) but with new sections and a tight non-binding fit it mows anything and it does it fast . I use under-serrated sections for grass and mixed hay but I don't really cut hay anymore with the sickle mower ( just the ditches ) , now I use a mowco with a sickle in it and so called self sharpening guards . To get a sickle set right is VERY time consuming . Don't expect to bolt new guards on and mow unless you are very lucky . But after the guards are set it's a easy matter to keep them that way . If you look close at the rock gaurd you may see a smoothed over rivit.On my MF and NH mower you can knock it out and repalce just the ledger plate.Then you onle have to replace the broken rockgaurds. Good luck!

Know how you feel. I just rebuilt a JD 1219 and that was a few $. The sections should not be that bad. The guards you want to look for wear and like Old said, bent or broken. Better than half the ones I replaced are ok, just not the ones specified so I went whole hog. (one time. They were single wear bar not double as called for). I did go through the whole machine, alignment and lube/maint. Cut like a dream. Picture in tractors under hay time on 6-20.

My self I replace them when the get bent, or the plate that the secktion run across are missing or the little lip on top is missing. Other that at those times I don't even worry about it unless of course its not cutting good
