If a 4x4 breaks, just unbolt it, line up a new one and re-drill the holes and rebolt it. We replaced one this weekend, only took about 1/2 hour to find the tools and fix it.

I stack 6-7 layers on those wagons no problem.

Materials:
2pc 2�x2�x3/16� angle, 1� long each
2pc 2-1/2�black steel pipe, 1' long each
2pc 2� black steel pipe, 5-1/2� long each
4 pc 1�x2�x1/2� flat steel
3-1�x6�x8�

Assembly:

1. Weld 2-1/2 in pipe to outside of one flat of the angle
2. Bolt angle to inside of runners with at least 3-1/2� bolts
3. Weld 2-1� pc of flat steel to each 2� pipe 18�(I reduced this to 12") from one end, 180 degrees from each other.
4. Insert 2� pipe into 2-1/2� pipe. �� flats will stop pipe from sliding through
5. Drill and bolt with 5/16� bolts tailgate boards to pipes as above.

I cut the bottom board to 5', attached it to the uprights 12 inches from the bottom. This supports the uprights on the bed. I then spaced 4 more boards cut to 6' equally with the top board 6" from the end. I placed 1 board on the back diagonally to strengthen the uprights. Everything is screwed on together with deck screws except the brace board. It was bolted. I'll post a pic if anybody wants one.
