Is it too late to plant my corn?

Hello there all, with work being busy at the start of planting season, and all the rain on the weekends during the later part, I"m just getting the fields ready to run the planter over them. I plowed and disked this past weekend, figure I"ll do a quick pass with a drag to smooth things over during the week here, and then take a shot at running the planter this coming weekend. Think the corn will still mature ok? I live in CT and use the corn for feed. I pick the ears, store them in the crib, and grind them as needed during the winter.

I"m also changing to a new planter this year. I bought a Ford 409 I think that"s the number. I have always had marginal results with my old MF39 planter, but the fertilizer attachment was rusted out and not operatuional. Any pointers anyone is willing to share would be appreciated. I don"t even know what I should be using for fertilizer in the new planter. I always broadcasted Urea in the past right after the last cultivation, but as broadcasting goes, I"m sure much was lost, or gobbled up by the weeds. Please feel free to share any thoughts you might have.

Here in MN we plant 95-105 day corn.

Planting after May 10 means losing yield.

Planting in June means you are desperate. We had a terrible rainy spring some years ago. I planted last corn on June 6th. Planted last beans on July 3rd. Still had 1/8 of my land unplanted, but with the rain, did not pay to keep trying.

It worked that year, got crops, but the yield was low.

I can't imagine you would get your seed cost back planting corn this late in the year. No point to it. Need to hustle a little more early on, get er done on time. :)

Corn likes P & K early when it is coming out of the ground, and likes N when it is pushing the growing point out of the ground & through seed fill. I too would apply the N before the cutivator, & work it into the ground.

Next year, of course, too late this year.

Side note, farm payments are geared to low commodity prices & weighted to corn. This past year soybeans had no extra payments at all, while corn had near record bonus payments. Can't do a straight-line comparison on acres planted based on gov payments....

If it was for silage, I'd say go for it. It would be a gamble if it would mature enough to really make a difference in the corn, but you'd still get some feed either way. For cob corn, you may be able to get away if it's a real short season hydrid, but I don't know if I'd take that gamble. We only chop it off the feild, and we've planted as late as the 25th of June before (last year) and had good results, but it didn't freeze until much later than normal. We have everything in now, but we have some we still need to get around to re-planting some spots here & there, mostly just to fill in the gaps and add to the silo. The latest feild we planted was 1 1/2 weeks ago, after taking off the 1st crop and plowing them under.

Planting a field is about a break even endevour anyway so take the cash you were going to put into it and buy a few acres from a neighbor and go in and pick it. I am sure you could find somebody that would sell it to you in the field or on the cob. It can cost a lot of money at this point and if it dont make it you will be out of all your money and have to buy it anyway. No big deal, it will work out good. Just go in and till it later in the fall and put in a winter wheat crop. You could even take the time and do some soil samples to find out what your crop needs for fertilizer. I did that this year and got a custom blend of fertilizer in a gravity box for what the ground needed. You may even be able to plant a nice field of oats that may make it. Not real sure how much time they need. Makes good hay if you want to cut it early. Something to think about. Good luck.

I think you would be pushing your luck to get even the earliest hybrid off for silage at this point, never mind ear corn. The last of mine went in 2 weeks ago, under plastic. That should do OK for silage, but it's still pushing it. We'll be wanting a hot summer, and a late frost, along with a dry fall..... Should have been in the ground last week of April - 1st week of May. Oh well....
For fertilizer, we go with about 10 ton of dairy manure per acre along with 200 # of 25-25-0, brodcast. If we had low phosphorus levels, we might go with a higher rate of 18-46-0. With this system, we do not topdress any AN. Without plastic, we would have gone in with a further 150 pounds of AN. Weed control is with Prime Extra II Magnum. Once it's planted, I won't go back until I'm ready to chop.....

Alan...if you asked a seed supplier for Soybeans in Connecticut, they'd look at you like you had three heads.

Looking at the stats...

CT Farmers got $663,000 in corn payments in '05.

And 2 guys got $139.00 (<-- note, no commas) for Soybeans. What's that...4000:1 ratio!

As I read your post you mention broadcasting urea after the last cultivation. It would be more beneficial to broadcast before the last one, to incorporate it. Otherwise you may lose 2/3 or more to the atmosphere; to go after ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate would be better (less volatile) choices.

About being late, I'd subtract days to maturity from your average first frost date and that will give you an idea. It is mighty late, even here in KY. We finished (my neighbor and I) planting his corn and my beans a week and a half ago, but thats silage corn.

I live in Northern Pa. and I planted corn a couple of years ago on June 10th and it never made it for ear corn. It was 85 day corn and lacked about 1 month of drydown time. If I were you I'd plant something else this late in the season like buckwheat. As far as fertilizer through the planter I use 10-20-20 or 15-15-15.

The saying "knee high by 4th of July" suggests that its to late. You might be able to get in away with it in the southern states depending on the variety you plant since the have a little longer growing season.

I would plant something else.
