IH 430 Baler Trouble

Last year the pick-up side knotter started to fail. Would miss 1 in 20, then 1 in 10, then almost every bale. We took a knotter off of the parts baler and didn"t have trouble the rest of the year. This year, started off fine, now the same side knotter is doing the same thing all over again. We have an operators manual and have read it, but are very busy and thought someone might have a quick solution to the problem. Thanks!

Junk it and get yourself a decent baler like a New Holland or John Deere. IH never made a baler that would tie a knot to save its lousy life. Dad had two of 'em, a 430 and a 435. They'd work okay for a few years, until they started to wear a little, then they'd do exactly what you're describing. The best baler guys in the state couldn't make either one of 'em tie. We'd spend three hours just to get 100 bales.

My opinion exactly! The worst baler ever built was called the IH 45T amd their reputation never really improved much after that either. For as little as a NH or a JD baler of the same vintage would cost, you are just torturing yourself to try to make an IJ baler work right.

If you want to get some "salvage" value out of the IH, and have an IH tractor of the appropriate age to go with it, a 430 baler, painted up and decaled would make a tremendous, interesting tractor show display!

Actually you can't blame IH for the 430 and 435 balers. They were actually built by New Idea for IH. I know a guy who had a 78' 430 who has baled 40 acres a year for the last 15 years, hardly a lick of trouble other than normal wear like teeth, etc.

What is the knotter doing when it fails? Not tieing a knot? Twine tangled up? Knot in top string or bottom string?

Check the tucker fingers, that's my motto. They hide underneath the knotter ( at least on ours ) and can be out of adjustment a tiny bit and mess up tieing intermittently and drive you crazy...

Simple knot over bale, other end nothing(just plain string). Sometimes they will even make it out of the baler tied and bust when you pick them up or go to put them in the barn.

If the twine over the top of the bale is knotless and shreaded, and if you're seeing small pieces of twine (1-2 inches) around the knotter, the twine keeper may be in need of adjustment. Also look for junk twine on the twine disc. If the keeper is too tight, it can part the twine and you get no knot or a knot without adequate twine in the knot - which pulls apart easy - like in the thrower or when you pick up the bale. Very annoying.

We adjusted the needle (it was off a lot) and found a tension spring and the holder were gone on this version of 430 knotter. It is different then the original knotter. This one came off of another 430T, our parts baler, thought it was changed by the previous owner, but the other side was the same style, so we took the holder and spring off of it and put it on the knotter that wasn't working.
Finding out that the string we are using is pure trash. "Rat's nests" as my dad likes to call them, jam up the twine on the way to the knotter. Also it is sometimes very thin. Dad likes using the 10000, I think I have him convinced to use 9000 when we run out of this stuff. Baler did better today, about 15 misses or so in 454 bales. Like to get that down to about 5 or less. The string was probably the reason for about 10 or more of the breaks today. The 430 can really eat the hay and makes good bales for us when it ties. $305 invested in 2 balers, we could get that back at the crusher!
