I have an older NI baler, a 456,and I've rented a newer one, a 486?- both of them are fixed chamber balers. I'll assume your 484 is also a fixed chamber baler. They make a soft center bale- which allows baling a bit wetter, since the bale can breathe. Older ones, like mine, have a gauge on the baler that indicates pressure. It is what you watch to make a solid bale. I think the one I rented had an in-cab guage, for the same reason. Balers, like any other machine, are made to run at normal pto speed-= either 540 or 1000 rpm. Run it that way while building the bale, and wrapping twine. After wrapping, I always slow the pto to discharge the bale. Ground speed- run as fast as the pickup will take up the hay- Ground speed has nothing to do with how tight the bale ends up being. My 456 relies on the tractor's hydraulic system to hold the rear baler door tight to make a tight bale- while the newer NI balers have a door latch to hold the door while building the bale- and the guage indicates how tight the bale is. Fixed chamber means- when the door is latched, you are dealing with a bale chamber that does not change size, so while the center is soft, and you cram more hay into the chamber, the bale gets tighter. Others, like Vermeer and JD, "store" the belts outside of a variable chamber and maintain the same bale density throughout the bale by 'pulling' the excess belt into the chamber as the bale increases in size. I think NH does the same thing with the chain setup- it's just that they use a chain instead of belts- but theirs is a variable chamber baler. Each has advantages- fixed chamber with the soft center is nice on wet hay so it can breathe and dry - variable chamber gives a bale with uniform density.
