I am considering buying a new disc mower. We have used a LELY Optimo 205 for several years. The dealer here is really pushing the Kuhn mower. We have a Kuhn rake and it is very high quality. Dowes anyone have any experience with the Kuhn mower? Tom

Shoot me if I am wrong, but I saw my first disc mower in 1975, and it was a Kuhn. I understood that Kuhn was the inventor of the mower to replace the sickle bar. I have owned 3 of them since. They have worked good.

I bought a kuhn FC303 about 4 yrs ago, with the gyrodine hitch and really like it. Kuhn came out and did some welding on it this spring with out being asked, I guess in Europe the had some troubles with the higher speed tractors and they fixed them before they broke in the US. I have not had any problems at all...Hope this helps shoot me an email if you need any more info...Jim

The Kuhn is a premium disc mower. You will find that the Kuhn will take more HP to use that your Lely disc mower. The Kuhn weighs more because it has 1/3 more moving parts and a cutterbar full of oil. If you like the advantages of the shaft design of the Lely Optimo disc mower you might want to look at the updated technology of the HayMaxx or Vermeer mowers. The newer designs have the Quick Clip Blade changing design or one blade bolt mounting system without all the costly blade mounting hardware the Lely Optimo had.

Isn't that neat? I was looking at the video clips ( no pun intended! ) on both the Vermeer and the Lely sites, What a simple, yet clever idea. It should make life a lot simpler.

Don't know about Kuhn, I have a Vicon CM247 that cuts 7'10". Bought it new 2 years ago and I love it. You can go like hell. I can cut more hay in one day that I can bale in three! You are on the right track buying a new one. I wouldn't give a nickel for a used disc mower. Way to much of a gamble. Lots of guys around here run em hard two or three years, do no maintence, then trade em. Mine cost me $5100 new, but the dealer is a close friend, he normally sells that model for $5800. But it is well worth it to buy new na not to have to worry about break downs. Mine only cuts 100 or less acres a year, and I change the oil every season, and it stays in the shed, so it should last me a looooo ng time, and yours will too if you treat it right.

I had a 1326 Deere that used a Kuhn cutter bar. It appeared to be pretty bullet proof. Mower was worn out when I got it, and caused me nothing but grief but the bar never gave me a minutes trouble.

I think that you will be pleased with a Kuhn mower. The first mower that I bought was a Kuhn and it was trouble free until holes started to wear in the top of the cutterbar. I decided to sell it instead of investing in a new cutterbar. From what I have been told and can see myself it is usually better to just get a new mower instead of investing in parts for the cutterbar. You can run into a lot of money going into the cutterbar of a disc mower. If one maintains the oil level and changes the oil and doesn"t run over posts and such the Kuhn will have many acres behind it when you need anything done in the cutterbar. Right now I am using a 5ft PZ drum mower that I like really well. It was a much cheaper than any disc mower and I was told that the maintenance would be less which so far I have found to be true. A neighbor has a FElla drum mower that I like better than the PZ that I have. If you don"t do large amounts of hay I would recommmend either of these drum mowers but if you cut a lot of hay you would be better to go with a 8ft or larger disc mower. From what I have heard the Kuhn is about the best disc mower,New Holland and Deere used them for many years, in fact Deere may still use the Kuhn.
