What type of wood was used on JD manure spreader bodies during the 1950's? Also ,was it sealed before painting or just painted bare?

I am restoring a Model R JD Spreader. As you may guess the wood is shot but I am using a hard maple for the floor and poplar for the sides. Should wear well. Am just going to spray with a very thinned paint first then a thicker coat. The thinned layer should soak in to preserve well. If you know where I can purchase a wheel and a paw unit I would appreciate finding out.

Deere used southern yellow pine on their silage boxes, so I would hazard a guess that they used it on their spreaders, too.

For practical reasons, if I were to re-wood a spreader, I'd use wolmanized lumber.

Realistically, you'll have to use what you can get (sassafras, bull pine???). Probably need treated lumber or next best, Southern Yellow Pine, maybe a type of oak if available.

If lucky it was Sassafras and if not it was bull pine don't know what the primer was and then just paint.
