What kind of planter or drill is used to plant pumpkin seed? I just planted a patch by hand and would like to find a better way for next year, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Mike, I know this is an older post, but I have planted pumpkins for many years with my 2 row corn planter. I only put seed in one side, and go from there. The only year I had any trouble was the year I ran the tractor too fast while in a rush, it chopped a bunch of seed up and had skips all over the place. If you use a corn planter, and go slow, you should make out fine. I always did. The hard part for me has always been weeding. Not many farmers left around my parts, so there isn't anyone to teach me how to use a weed control spraying program. I don't know what to spray for the weeds. I can tell you one thing, you need to keep up on the fungiside and keep those pesky little cucumber beetles out of your patch with some insectaside, or you can loose a nice crop of pumpkins pretty quick to bacterial wilt or powdery mildew. I have had it happen to me a few times. It kills your spirit when it happens.

We use a one row planter that we built. Works very slick. E-mail me if you want some pictures of it.

When I raised them I planted them 24" apart in the row on 4' row centers. I used a 1 row tobacco transplanter, put a pc of 2" water pipe in the transplant shoe and dropped the seeds into the pipe. The transplanter has a water a barrel to that puts a pint of water into the furrow. At least its a sit down job.

I'm bushed trying to look after eight acres of walnut seedlings.

I marked the rows with a JD 7000 planter and then skipped every other one so they are on 6" centers I can cultivate with my 274 IH and when the plants get big I can run in between the rows.
